Love is the base of marriage, and marriage is the development of love. In the past, people used to marry without their own consent, that is, without their own experience of love, the parents arranged the marriage. Two persons, a man and a woman, who were entirely strangers, were united in wedlock, and became husband and wife. They had known nothing of each other before, and of course, love was a sealed book to both. This type of marriage often leads to unhappiness. Tragic stories about ill-matched couples were often heard. So love is the foundation of marriage, and a marriage without love won’t be a happy one. And nowadays, with the development of society, love becomes more noble, rich, fine and subtle. Therefore, love is sometimes romantic; the lovers don’t pay too much attention to the trivial of daily life. Some people fall in love at first sight and rush into marriage. They usually neglect the commitment a marriage demands. They may come across with some problems in their marriage that is likely to end up with a divorce. This seems to prove that love in a marriage is not so romantic as one often imagines, but as practical as mutual respect and compromise in the common life of a family.

Family in this sense is the extension of marriage. A family based on a marriage may last if it fulfills the function of reproduction. However, nothing can be more effective for a family to fulfill its function than love. Love between a husband and a wife, love between parents and children and love between all the family members can pave the way for all the family to a bright future. The families that could survive the hardships and develop from generation to generation are characterized by love and harmony.

In a word, love is the base of marriage and family. One famous man once said,“ In a world of existence, there is indeed no greater power than the power of love.” In a marriage, love needs to be manifested in a cooperative and sharing manner. And with a happy marriage, the family will be happy.

Ethnocentrism is one barrier to effective interculturalcommunication,and it refers to negatively judging aspects of another culture by the standards of one’s own culture;for people with ethnocentrism,they tend to regard their own culture as the center of the world,and the other culture is accordingly inferior to the one they hold(Xu 2004,291).In Pangs of Love,ethnocentrism plays a dominant role in creating Mrs.Pang and children's pangs.

Influenced by ethnocentrism,Mrs.Pang lives an isolated lifewith pangs in America.Although she has lived in America for 40years,she manages not to learn English.It is her seemingly obstinate attitude toward preserving her own language that results in her constant pains in the sequential events.When Mrs.Pang intends to participate in the children's conversation,no one shows interest in taking with her because of her poor English.She often confines herself to watching the wrestling game on TV,for this program does not demand any mastery of language.In Mrs.Pang's mind,Chinese girls are the perfect choice for the daughters-in-law.Therefore,she spares no efforts to urge her sons to seek wives in Hong Kong.The sons despise this idea,which greatly disheartens Mrs.Pang.Even though Mrs.Pang has been in America for 40 years,she still holds on to the Chinese traditional values tightly and ignores the American culture.It is this attitude,ethnocentrism,that causes her numerous pangs when she gets along with the American-born children.

Brought up in the United States,the narrator and his brotherBilly are Americanized in a way.They consider all the stuff in America as best ones.Thus,their mother's manners bewilder them in most cases.As for traditions their mother maintains,they show little respect for it.When the narrator drives his mother and Deborah to Billy’s house,he holds his mother in contempt.“She seems out of place in a car,near machines,a woman from another culture,of another time,at ease with needle land thread,around pigs and horses"(Louie 1991,259).It can be noticed that the narrator feels ashamed of his own mother due to her different cultural background.When Billy learned that Mrs.Pang had brought the Chinese food to him,he had a fit.Moreover,Billy intentionally turns off the set that Mrs.Pang is currently watching."He doesn't want his friends to know he dropped from the womb of one who lives something as low as wrestling"(Louie 1991,271).He fails to understand why his mother has been a wrestling fan for ages.He only cares about whether he is likely to be looked down upon by his friends owing to his mother's poor taste.Because of their disdain for their mother's odd Chinese manners,they also suffer from living an uneasy life.

Being a native American,Deborah is indifferent to Mrs.Pangon many occasions.She subconsciously supposes Mrs.Pang is inferior.She greets Mrs.Pang in an impolite fashion.After Mrs.Pang asks how Deborah is,Deborah offers no answer.“Won't waste her breath on someone who can't take the conversation the next step"(Louie 1991,257).She even ridicules Mrs.Pang’s poor English occasionally when Mrs.Pang couldn't understand what she is talking about.Mrs.Pang's talking manners even gets on her nerves.Both Mrs.Pang and Deborah cling to their own ways of doing things and do not try to make way for each other,and that's why their relationship is increasingly tense.

However,conflicts and the sequential pangs can be avoided.A prime example of this is Mandy.She does her utmost to relate to Mrs.Pang.There is no ethnocentrism in Mandy's mind.In order to interact with Mrs.Pang better,Mandy learns to speak Cantonese and celebrates the Chinese festivals with Mrs.Pang.

Conflicts will always arise when people with different culturalbackgrounds communicate with one another,thus the sequential pangs emerge.Through the analysis,it is their ethnocentrism that plays a key part in creating the pangs.But pangs can be averted if people try to understand the culture and accept it sincerely,andMandy’s successful communication is a case in point.

Win at the starting line

Good afternoon, everyone. Very happy to see so many new faces here. I am Wang Pengyuan, a senior student from class 1101. Today, it gives me a great honor to give a welcome speech here, to share with you some of my experiences as well as give you some suggestions in the beginning of your college life.

Actually, I am very much curious about your definitions of a good college life at this special point. Someone once complained to me that the college life is totally a waste of time and money. Do you think so? The answer is definitely no. Here I want to tell you that if you try to manage your college life well, you will find that it will be really a valuable part of your life.

And now I’m going to share with you my personal experiences of my college life. I remember when I was a freshman, a junior student was giving a speech on this stage I was so impressed by her, and made my mind to study hard. So what I did in my pervious three years was just about making full use of college resources to develop my own potentials. In my first year, I studied hard as I did in my high school, attending every class, listening to teachers carefully, reviewing after class and doing homework by myself. College at that time was a brand new stage for me, I was trying to find my way of adapting to it quickly. I participated in various kinds of activities to improve my abilities, such as joining in the students union, going to the old people’s home, selling newspapers outside campus, taking part in chorus competition and recitation contest. I think my ability is somehow improved through the year of efforts.

The second year was a very important turning point for me. I tried to learn more by myself and then apply the knowledge into practice. The very important event for me is the 18th China Daily 21st century cup national English speaking competition in which I got the first prize in our school. But what I want to mention is only the benefits I gained from this competition, for example, my English speaking ability has been improved, and no longer afraid of saying a word in public and also I made friends with many students from other universities with whom I can share experience. And some other competitions like Hubei provincial translation and interpreting competition, and so many more.

Another part is the social activities. In July , I went to Singapore to be a volunteer in the second international traditional martial arts competition. That was also an amazing experience in my life. As you can see that I witnessed with my own eyes a different culture thus broadening my horizons. So here I want to appeal to you all that seize every opportunity to develop yourself, for the college is an integrated platform in the journey of your life through which you are bound to grow up.

The third years seems like a great leap for me. Equipped with the solid foundation I laid in the previous two years, I further participated in some important major-related contests, such as the outlook talent show held by CCTV, the fifth cross-strait interpreting competition and national English ability competition. Through all these contests, I found myself much more confident in the road ahead.

Next I’m going to give you some suggestions to help you manage your college life better.

Suggestion1: Learn as much as possible.

For most of us college can be an unforgettable period for us to learn something. Some one once said that university is like a dye vat, which means that you may be easily influenced by others. If you want to learn something you will be embraced by knowledge and wisdom; and if you don’t have the desire to learn you will find you get nothing after 4 years’ college life.

Suggestion2: Cultivate your potentials and interests.

As we know, university is an integrated platform compared with high school. You do not need to bury your head in the books all day long. You need to conduct your self-cultivation and find where your interests lie in. For example, if you have the talent for dancing, you can join in the dance association. Just show it. Life will be colorful if there is joy.

Suggestion3: Always be optimistic and hopeful.

Everybody knows that college life is mostly determined by ourselves. Sometimes you may find that teachers can’t instruct you in every aspects. So you may easily come across difficulties with which you will get bored. But please remember that life has its ups and downs, adversity is just part of our lives. Be optimistic, you will always find your way out.

In a word, combine all the suggestions I’ve mentioned above with your own characteristics and stick to it, you will find success lies in somewhere along the road.
