(一) 交际语言测试的产生

交际语言测试是在心理语言学、社会语言学时期产生的一种测试模式。20世纪90年代, 美国应用语言学家Bachman提出了一个新的交际语言能力测试模式, 该模式在当时的美国测试界产生了广泛的影响, 被认为是语言测试史上的一个里程碑。Bachman认为, 语言交际能力就是把语言知识和语言使用的场景特征结合起来, 创造并解释意义的能力。它由语言能力、策略能力和心理生理机制三部分组成。语言能力指具体的语言知识, 指进行语言交际的运用语言知识;策略能力指运用语言知识的心理能力, 是将语言知识运用于交际目的的手段;心理生理机制指语言交际时所涉及的神经和心理过程。它不仅指出交际能力应当包括语言能力、语篇能力和语用能力等范畴, 而且指出它们之间不是一个简单的并列关系, 而是一种互动的关系。也就是说, 语言的使用是一个动态的过程。Bachman的这一模式不仅较为全面地解释了交际语言能力所包含的基本因素, 而且说明了各因素之间的相互关系, 这为交际语言测试理论模式的形成和发展奠定了坚实的基础。

(二) 交际语言测试的主要特征

交际语言测试是一种行为测试, 是在真实或接近真实的情景中通过完成实际的交际任务来测量考生运用语言知识的能力。因此, 交际语言测试应体现三个原则, 即交际原则、任务原则和意义原则。其特征具体表现为:

1. 交际语言测试强调语言交际功能这一本质, 而不是语言的形式和结构。如BEC口试, 安排考生2—3人为一组, 根据实际需要分析, 确定考生话题, 使得每一位考生都有明确的实际对象和交际目的。

2. 交际语言测试虽然也测试语言知识, 但更侧重对语言行为的测试。试卷中规定若干具体的任务, 任务的设计基于现实生活的需要, 以检测考生运用语言完成所规定的交际任务的能力。因此, 考生不仅要掌握一定的语言知识, 而且要具备正确理解各种交际情景, 并能在不同的语境中恰当地运用所掌握的语言知识的能力。

3. 交际语言测试材料力求真实, 且具有代表性, 体现在真实生活中以及特定的社会文化环境中进行交际时使用语言的一些主要特征。

4. 交际语言测试强调听、说、读、写四种技能在语篇层次上的综合运用能力, 这显然比结构主义离散的、脱离语境的测试形式又进了一步。因为语言在实际使用中各种技能之间是相互交织、相互转化的, 一种技能不可能孤立地使用, 而独立于其他技能之外。

5. 在测试方法上, 交际语言测试更注重于语言测试的效度而不是信度。这种测试虽然难以提供客观、可靠的量化数据, 但测试效度很高, 可以更加直接地测量考生运用语言知识的能力。

(三) 评分的方法

1. Hughes的两种评判途径

交际性测试的主观题的评判可以采用Hughes提出的两种评判途径:一是整体评判, 即评分者根据对受试者表现的整体印象一次性评判。这种方法的优点, 是评判迅速, 一份试卷可由几位评分者分别评分, 从而最大限度地保证评分信度。二是分析性评判, 即评分者根据特定评判标准对于测试任务的不同方面分别评分, 然后综合评定。这种评判方法的优点, 一是可以促使受试者语言技能的均衡发展, 二是评判者对一份试卷可给出多个分数, 因而往往能保证测试的信度;其缺点是花费时间。为了弥补这些缺陷, 有时需再进行一次整体性评判。

2. Bachman, Palmer和Farhady的评分方法

Bachman和Palmer认为, 由于测试的目的不同, 测试中涉及的任务量也是不同的。因而有很多种具体的评分方法, 但概括起来可归纳为两种:一是把成绩看做成功完成的测试任务的数量, 即把受试者答对的题的分数加起来。这种方法主要用于选择或表达受限制的题项。具体实施这种方法一般有两个步骤:第一, 确定构成“成功完成任务”的标准, 即判断正误的尺度。第二, 确定按对错打分还是按不同的正确程度打分。如Farhady设计的多项选择题的四个选项中, 一项是既语法正确又符合社会习惯, 选择此项可得满分2分;另外两项是部分正确选项, 即语言正确或得体各具其一, 选择这两项中的任何之一者可得1分;最后一项是语言既不正确也不得体, 选此项不得分。

Farhady设计的测试克服了交际性测试过去忽视语言准确性的缺点, 吸取了分立式测试测验语言项目的特点, 并将其体现在评分要求中, 从而使交际性测试与分立式测试有机地结合起来, 发挥了两者的长处。同时, 可确定不同的语言能力等级, 根据这些等级评判考试测试任务完成的情况。这种方法主要用来评判那些激励型的题项, 如口头回答问题、作文等。

二、大学英语试题设计

1.口语测试

既然口语技能是交际能力中非常重要的技能之一, 那么在大学英语正式考试中, 将口语考试排除在外, 这对于全面发展学生的交际能力是不可取的。交际性口语测试具有真实性、功能性、交互性、情景性和综合性等特点。其常见模式有双向交互式和多向交互式;常用的方法有角色扮演、面谈和讨论等。如果大规模考试的可行性能得以解决, 那么口语考试将是正式考试的一个重要组成部分。在中国许多大学, 老师建议若能解决主观性评分和大规模举办所带来的诸多问题, 口语测试应尽可能早地列入到大学英语专业考试 (TEM) 中去。1994年, 南京大学已率先完成了对专业英语四级口语测试可行性的研究, 且现行大学英语考试中的口语测试正在我国一些城市和省份有条不紊地进行着。

2.主客观题比例

语言考试中, 所有考试题型不应都是客观的, 主客观题的比例应加以适当的调整。然而, 一旦在我国现行大学英语考试中增加了主观题, 就会出现评分者在打分时标准各有所不同的情况。所以, 一方面, 我们要对评分者进行培训, 以应用双重评分原则 (double scoring) 来减少评分差异, 保持评分的可信度;另一方面, 我们在小规模的考试中, 如进步考试 (progress tests) 和学业成就考试 (achievement tests) , 可多采用主观试题, 在大规模考试中, 如大学英语考试 (CET) , 可适当控制主观题的数量以避免因评分标准的差异所带来的诸多困难。

3.完整的语境

在语篇的层面上, 对应试者的阅读理解能力和写作水平应进行测试。我们以完型填空 (cloze) 为例, 它选择相对完整的文章, 为应试者提供一定丰富的语境。现行大学英语考试中, 一些含有完整语境的交际性测试题已正在被广泛应用。例如:

4.综合技能测试

综合测试法主张测试题应处于更大的语境框架中, 从单词扩展到连贯的语篇, 同时, 综合考核应试者几个语言特点的掌握情况和为交际服务的语言使用能力及语言运用能力。在一个完整的交流语场中, 听与说是密切相连的。然而, 目前客观性较强的听力考试只注重听的能力和对信息的接受能力, 而在口语表达方面并无顾及。因此, 在大规模的考试中, 应在原有的客观性较强的听力试题上多加入口语表达的内容, 使听与说能得到更好的结合。例如:

三、结论

随着交际教学法的不断深入和扩大, 实施交际性测试已刻不容缓。然而, 交际性测试需要的不仅仅是在理论上的改进, 在其可靠性、实效性、收集和采纳考试结果以及评分标准等方面也需要有不同程度的改善。当我们将大学英语考试的一些理论付诸于实践时, 我们应采取一些务实的态度。为了更好地明确在现行大学英语考试发展阶段我们该如何做, 我们就必须得进行调查、研究和深入的分析。无论怎样, 学习一门语言的目的就是为了在实践中应用, 而且现行大学英语考试也是为了对学生语言应用能力的测试。这样看来, 随着交际性测试一些具体问题的逐步解决, 交际性测试的前途将一片光明。

摘要:随着我国大学英语教学的改革与发展, 交际教学法得到了广泛的应用。在广泛应用以交际法为主导的语言教学的今天, 交际性语言测试的形式应运而生。在交际测试理论下, 能从口语测试、主客观题比例、完整的语境、综合技能测试和评分标准这几个方面更有效、更科学地指导和促进大学英语试题的设计。

词汇是语言的基础, 词汇量的大小和能否灵活运用是判断学习者是否学好语言的重要手段。当前, 我国英语词汇测试存在一个普遍问题:重词汇的输入和理解, 即词汇习得的广度, 忽视词汇习得的深度, 即词汇的产出。词汇测试的题型多为四选一的单项选择, 主要考查学生的语言知识和词汇的辨识能力, 词汇的深度知识 (学生对词汇理解和应用) 测试往往被忽略, 得不到足够的重视。所以, 对词汇量关注的同时, 我们要意识到词汇学习不仅仅是量的增加, 更重要的是词汇掌握的质量, 即产出性词汇深度知识的发展。产出性词汇能力主要体现在学生的说、写活动中。学习者在长期学习过程中积累了一定的词汇量, 但在理解言语和表达思想时, 往往想不起来, 常常不能有效地调动已积累的词汇, 或虽然想起却使用不当, 词不达意。但目前在说和写的测试中, 往往多采用听写或评价者综合给分的形式, 听写也只是考查学生其辨识、拼写单词的能力, 属接受性词汇知识, 而综合给分形式, 主观性较大, 缺乏一定的客观标准。因此, 有必要对原有的词汇测试题型作一些改变, 增加一些测试形式。一.接受性词汇与产出性词汇的关系

一个人的词汇知识可分为接受性和产出性词汇知识, 这是Nation在1990首次提出的词汇知识的二分法, 前者指学习者在语境中能够认识、理解, 但是不能够正确使用的词汇。后者指的是学习者能够正确发音, 理解并能够在口头和笔头等表达性活动中能够正确使用的词汇。词汇的被习得表现在两个方面:一是其意义被认知和理解 (不是猜出) , 二是可自然而适合情景使用, 语音、语法正确。这也表现在理解和表达两方面。对于接受性词汇, 学习者只需了解该词的读音、辨识其拼写形式和最常见意义即可, 而产出性词汇则要求学习者对该词有全面理解且在使用时能达到自动化程度。接受性词汇和产出性词汇习得是两种不同的心理过程, 是内部词库的不同使用, 通过两种不同的加工方式进行:一种是自动的激活扩散加工, 另一种是有意识的注意加工。接受/产出性词汇的区别取决于学习者词汇知识认知程度。这些阶段可以被描述为:

A.从未遇到过这个词。

B.听到这个词, 但无法定义它。

C.由于上下文或语音语调认识的词。

D.能够使用和理解词的一般意义, 但不能清楚地解释它。

E.流利或熟练地使用该词。

因此, 一般来说, 一个人的接受性词汇往往大于产出性词汇。即一般接受性使用优于产生性使用, 学习者能识别的词汇远高于能产出和表达的词汇。即, 在第二语言习得的过程中, 学习者的产出性词汇量往往少于接受性词汇量, Nation (1990) 认为掌握一个词意味着了解它的形式 (口头、书面) 、位置 (语法句型、搭配) 、功能 (频率、得体性) 和意义 (概念、联想) 。综上所述, 产出性词汇知识可归纳为:能掌握词的正确发音和拼写;了解词的形态变化和句法特征;知道该词与其他词之间的关系及搭配;了解该词在不同语境中的不同意义, 能在口笔语中运用自如。所以, 产出性词汇的习得是每一个语言学习者词汇学习的终极目标, 第二语言词汇教学的目的是增加学习者的可用词汇量, 即二语学习者可以随意自由地使用和产出词汇, 词汇的测试也应以此为目标, 即测试学习者的产出性词汇知识。

二.改进词汇测试形式, 增强产出意识

1. 改革填空形式

测试一般分为识别测试和回忆测试两种形式, 识别测试形式多为选择题和判断正误等, 回忆测试则要求更高, 多采用填空、简短回答和翻译等。我国传统测试所采用的形式大部分是识别测试, 主要体现在CET4和CET6考试的词汇测试中, 这种测试形式造成学习者只停留在对词汇音、形、义等接受性词汇的识别层面上, 忽略了对产出性知识的运用和掌握, 妨碍了产出性词汇的增长和提高。因此, 有必要改进词汇测试形式, 巩固学习者习得的词汇知识并促进其内化, 帮助学生更深层的处理词汇, 强化记忆, 提高产出性词汇的量与质。例如:

(1) Because of his____view of the world, Einstein established the theory of relativity.

A.distinct B.distinctive C.indistinct D.indistinctive

这三种题型难易程度不同, 做题 (1) 时, 学习者只需辨认词形提取词义即可, distinctive一词处于被动识别状态。题 (2) 要求学习者在提取词义的同时还要能根据所给字母提示以及上下文语境写出正确的词形。如果答对, 表明distinctive在学习者的心理词库中具有了一定的产出水平, 题 (3) 无字母提示。如果答对, 表明学习者对distinctive一词完全理解, 其主动产出性要大于前两项的水平。因此, 题 (2) 和题 (3) 题型更有利于对不同水平学习者的产出性词汇进行测试, 在此基础上, 学习者从记忆中检索已学词项并在适当上下文中使用它们, 写出词的适当形式, 尤其是名词的数、动词的人称、时态、语态, 是测试学习者产出性词汇能力的又一要求, 而单纯的选择填空题型则无法做到这一点。如;

以上的题既要求学习者写出单词的正确形式, 还要求其注意单词在语境中变化, 尤其是名词的数、动词的人称、时态、语态等适当形式。

2. 单词语境和释义测试

利用单词语境和释义测试是一种通过外部刺激激活学习者内部接受性词汇的有利测试方法, 它有助于强化已有的接受性词汇与产出性词汇之间的内在联系, 促进学生对词汇的深加工处理。如,

To f_____means to make a sudden small movement because of pain or fear. (flinch)

We arrived in Shanghai in the morning and de_______in the evening for the next stop. (departed)

3. 改写/转述测试

改写/转述是一种集输入与输出于一体的活动, 要求学生即要利用已有的语言知识, 又要采用新的语言知识来保障输出任务的完成。这比单纯的单词听写和选择填空更能测试出学习者的产出性词汇知识。例如:

(1) You can tell the difference between A and Bby…

You can distinguish A and B by…

(2) Somebody opened the door and the candle blew out.

Somebody opened the door and the candle became extinguished.

总之, 产出性词汇测试能够快捷、客观地检测学生是否掌握了相应的可用词汇。本文讨论的词汇产出测试只涉及了对学生书面输出能力的测试, 至于在检测学习者产出性词汇其他方面还需要做进一步深入的研究和探讨。当前, 外语教学越来越重视学习者产出性词汇能力的培养, 教师应充分认识到产出性词汇在二语习得中的重要性, 词汇测试应采用多种手段, 灵活巧妙地促进学习者从接受性动词汇向产出性词汇的有效转化。测试在教学中起着关键作用, 学习者产出意识的增强, 产出性词汇量的增长以及词汇能力的提高都期待词汇测试形式做相应的改变。
