The following passage contains ten errors .Each line contains a maximum of one error. In each case only one word is involved. You should proofread the passage and correct it in the following way:

For a wrong word: underline the wrong word and write the correct one in the blank provided at the end of the line.

For a missing word: mark the position of the missing word with a “^” sign and write the word you believe to be missing in the blank provided at the end of the line.

For an unnecessary word: cross the unnecessary word with a slash “/” and put the word in the blank provided at the end of the line.

One important outcome of the work on the expression of genes in developing embryos is sure to be knowledge that can help preventing birth defects. Just as promising

(26)

is the possibility of unraveling the complicated writing

(27)

of the brain. A mechanic gets valuable insight how an

(28)

automobile works by rebuilding car engines; similarly,

neuroscientists can learn how the brain functions from

(29)

the way it is put together. The next step pursuing the

(30)

goal is to find out how the blueprint genes, the home box

genes, control the expression of other genes that create the

valves and piston of the working cerebral engine. The

protein encoded by the latter genes could change the

(31)

stickiness of the cell surface, the shape of the cell or its

metabolism to create the characteristic peculiar to, say,

neurons or neural-crest cell. Surface proteins may be the

(32)

mechanism, whereby similar programmed cells stick

together to form specific structures; they might also sense

(33)

the local environment to help the cell decide what is to do.

Clarifying those mechanisms will engage the best talents in

(34)

embryology and molecular biology for some times to come.

(A)

Why do men die earlier than women? The latest research makes it known that the reason could be that men’s hearts go into rapid decline when they reach middle age.

The largest study of the effects of ageing on the heart has found that women’s longevity may be linked to the fact that their hearts do not lose their pumping power with age.

“We have found that the power of the male heart falls by 20-25 percent between 18 and 70 years of age,” said the head of the study, David Goldspink of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK.

“Within the heart there are millions of cells that enable it to beat. Between the age of 20 and 70, one-third of those cells die and are not replaced in men,” said Goldspink. “This is part of the ageing process.”

What surprises scientists is that the female heart sees very little loss of these cells. A healthy 70-year-old woman’s heart could perform almost as well as a 20-year-old one’s.

“This gender difference might just explain why women live longer than men,” said Goldspink. They studied more than 250 healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 80, focusing on healthy persons to remove the confusing influence of disease. “The team has yet to find why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart,” said Goldspink.

The good news is that men can improve the health of their heart with regular exercise. Goldspink stressed that women also need regular exercise to prevent their leg muscles becoming smaller and weaker as they age.

1. The underlined word “longevity” in the second paragraph probably refers to “____”.

A. health B. long life C. ageing D. effect

2. The text mainly talks about ____.

A. men’s heart cells B. women’s ageing process

A. women have more cells than men when they are born

B. women can replace the cells that enable the heart to beat

C. the female heart loses few of the cells with age

D. women never lose their pumping power with age

4. If you want to live longer, you should ____.

A. enable your heart to beat much faster

B. find out the reason for ageing

C. exercise regularly to keep your heart healthy

D. prevent your cells from being lost

5. We can know from the passage that ____.

A. the reason why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart has been found out

B. scientists are on the way to finding out why the male heart loses more of the cells

C. the team has done something to prevent the male from suffering the greater loss

Xinjiang: The plane carrying the bodies of three Chinese engineers, who were shot dead in Pakistan on Wednesday, landed at Urumqi airport on Friday.

Investigations are focusing on why no guards escorted the engineers the day when they were attacked. Local police usually accompanied the group during their travels in the country.

Earlier in the day, 10 other Chinese engineers who worked together with the victims returned to Hefei. They were all from Hefei Cement Research & Design Institute, and were in Pakistan to offer technical services for the construction of a cement factory there.

“The guards of the Chinese engineers were not accompanying them when they were attacked,” local police officer Pervez Zahoor said. “Police are investigating as to why the guards did not do so that day.”

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf said in Islamabad on Friday that all the development activities between Pakistan and China would continue and the incident would not affect the friendship between the two countries. He told Xinhua News Agency that the incident had shocked him. “We condemn it in the strongest terms,” he said. “We are annoyed at those who carried out this very evil act. We are determined to catch them and give them the strongest and harshest punishment.”

Families of the victims—Long Hongbao, 32, Wei Jianping, 54, and Zhao Bin, 46—have spoken of their disaster. “I can’t accept his death, as he called me only days ago to say he would be coming back this Saturday,” Zhao’s wife said. The father of Long, from Hefei, said, “My son was the pillar of the family. How can this tragedy have happened to him?”

Families of the victims are expected to get at least 400,000 yuan (US$ 49,000) in compensation according to their insurance policies.

A. China will not send engineers to Pakistan until the attackers are found

B. Luckily the three families will get compensation from the government of Pakistan

C. In all there are thirteen engineers working in Pakistan now

(C)

Spacing in animals

Flight Distance

Any observant people has noticed that a wild animal will allow a man or other potential enemy to approach only up to a given distance before it escapes. “Flight distance” is the terms used for this interspecies spacing. As a general rule, there is a positive relationship between the size of an animal and its flight distance—the larger the animal, the greater the distance it must keep between itself and the enemy. An antelope will escape when the enemy is as much as five hundred yards away. The wall lizard’s flight distance, on the other hand, is about six feet. Flight is the basic means of survival for mobile creatures.

Critical Distance

Critical distance apparently is present wherever and whenever there is a flight reaction. “Critical distance” includes the narrow zone separating flight distance from attack distance. A lion in a zoo will flee from an approaching man until it meets a barrier that it cannot overcome. If the man continues the approach, he soon penetrates the lion’s critical distance, at which point the cornered lion turns back and begins to slowly stalk (逼近) the man.

Social Distance

Social animals need to stay in touch with each other. Loss of contact with the group can be fatal(致命的) for a variety of reasons including exposure to enemies. Social distance is not simply the distance at which an animal will lose contact with his group—that is, the distance at which it can no longer see, hear, or smell the group—it is rather a psychological distance, one at which the animal apparently begins to feel anxious when it goes beyond its limits. We can think of it as a hidden band that contains the group.

Social distance varies from species to species. It is quite short—apparently only a few yards—among some animals, and quite long among others.

Social distance is not always rigidly (刻板的) fixed but is determined in part by the situation. When the young of apes and humans are mobile but not yet under control of the mother’s voice, social distance may be the length of her reach. This is readily observed among baboons(狒狒) in a zoo. When the baby approaches a certain point, the mother reaches out to seize the end of its tail and pull it back to her. When added control is needed because of danger, social distance shortens. To show this in man, one has only to watch a family with a number of small children holding hands as they cross a busy street.

1. Which of the following is the most suitable explanation to “Flight distance”? ____.

A. Distance between animals of the same species before escaping

B. Distance between large and small animals before escaping

C. Distance between an animal and its enemy before escaping

D. Distance between certain animal species before escaping

2. If an animal’s critical distance is penetrated, it will ____.

A. begin to attackB. try to hideC. begin to jumpD. run away

3. According to the passage, social distance refers to ____.

A. distance at which one cannot see the group

B. psychological distance

C. distance at which the mother baboon can seize the baby’s tail

D. distance at which an animal will lose touch with the group

4. The example of the children holding hands when crossing the street in the last paragraph shows that ____.

A. social distance is not always needed

B. there is no social distance among children

C. humans are different from animals in social distance

D. social distance is sometimes determined by outside factors

(D)

At a hospital in Illinois, doctors and patients dress up as clowns (小丑) and put on little plays to make each other laugh. A hospital in New York puts funny books in its library for patients.

Can laughter make sick people feel better?

Yes, say scientists. Laughter is no laughing matter. Scientists think laughter can help sick people feel less pain and get better more quickly. This new idea is being taught to students in medical school.

Doctors have known for a long time that stress and loneliness, lack of friends and family can harm sick people. Now they are learning that laughter can help put people on the road to recovery.

Scientists discovered that laughter gives the body a healthy form of exercise. Also, laughter set free a chemical in the body that speeds healing.

Some doctors are using this new research to make their patients feel like a million dollars. At a California hospital, people who have cancer tell each other funny stories and perform with a famous actor who has had cancer surgery (手术).

Part II Reading comprehension (35 minutes)

Passage One

It’s a brand new world --- a world built around brands. Hard-charging, noise-making, culture-shaping brands are everywhere. They’re on supermarket shelves, of course, but also in business plans for .com startups and in the names of sports complexes. Brands are infiltrating (渗透)people’s everyday lives --- by sticking their logoes (商标) on clothes, in concert programs, on subway Cstation walls, even in elementary school classrooms .

We live in an age in which CBS newscasters wear Nike jackets on the air, in which Burger King and McDonald’s open kiosks(小亭) in elementary school lunchrooms, in which schools like Stanford University are endowed with a Yahoo! Founders Chair. But as brands reach (and then overreach) into every aspects of our lives, the companies behind them invite more questions, deeper scrutiny―and an inevitable backlash(强烈反应) by consumers.

“Our intellectual lives and our public spaces are being taken over by marketing ---and that has real implications for citizenship,” says author and activists Naomi Klien. “It’s important for any healthy culture to have public space--- a place where people are treated as citizens instead of as consumers. We’ve completely lost that space.

Since the mid-1980s ,as more and more companies have shifted from being about products to being about ideas C Starbucks isn’t selling coffee; It’s selling community!----those companies have poured more and more resources into marketing campaigns.

To pay for those campaigns, those same companies figured out ways to cut costs elsewhere, for example, by using contract labor at home and low-wage labor in developing countries. Contract laborers are hired on a temporary, per-assignment basis, and employers have no obligation to provide any benefits (such as health insurance) or long-term job security. This saves companies money but obviously puts workers in vulnerable situations. In the United States, contract labor has given rise to so-called McJobs, which employers and workers alike pretend are temporary----even though these jobs are usually held by adults who are trying to support families.

The massive expansion of marketing campaigns in the 1980s coincided with the reduction of government spending for schools and for museums. This made those institutions much too willing, even eager, to partner with private companies. But companies took advantage of the needs of those institutions, reaching too far, and overwhelming the civic space with their marketing agendas.

21.Which of the following does the author state as a factor in the increasing presence of brands in people’s lives?

A the aggressive nature of corporate marketing

B the lack of government funding for schools and museums

C the lack of government regulations of marketing methods

1. DC/AC主电路
