近年来阅读逐渐引起了社会各界的广泛关注, 发达国家的阅读系统和推广经常被引用和介绍。阅读是语言学习最有效的方法, 已是不争的事实, 这个观点也得到了家长的支持和拥护。去年在央视汉字英雄竞赛中一举夺得冠亚军的杭州外国语学校的学生, 也坦承地透露诀窍在于广泛、扎实的课外阅读。
自由自主阅读 (Free Voluntary Reading, FVR) 是指纯粹为了兴趣而阅读的无压力阅读, 不必写读后感, 也无需回答问题。这一概念最早由美国南加州大学著名语言学家斯蒂芬. 克拉生 ( Stephen D. Krashen) 提出。在克拉生教授的《阅读的力量》一书中, 他用大量的全球各国关于阅读的学术研究数据向读者展现了阅读的强大力量:它对提升词汇量、增进语法、培养写作风格, 甚至口语的流利都有显著成效, 中文阅读也被证实与写作存在正向相关的关系。
阅读对母语学习的重要性是毋庸置疑的, 那么它对于第二语言的学习是否也有效呢?《阅读的力量》一书中引用了来自德国、日本、新加坡、台湾等英语作为第二语言学习国家和地区的相关研究, 证实阅读对小学、中学、大学不同年龄的第二语言学习同样有效, 能全面提高阅读理解力、词汇、口语能力、语法、听力和写作能力。研究还表明, 自由阅读时间的长短能够成功预测英语托福成绩 (TOEFL是外国学生申请美国大学时须参加的英文语言能力测试, 包括听力、阅读、语法和写作) , 报告自己课外阅读较多的考生, 托福成绩也比较高。
中文阅读较易操作, 特别是孩子到了小学中高年级, 能够独立阅读了, 只要根据一些书单, 为孩子购买高质量的书籍即可。但是英文隔着文字和文化的差异, 家庭阅读的可操作性就非常低。自由自主阅读是因兴趣而引发的阅读行为, 要让中国孩子爱上英语阅读, 那是难上加难。读什么和怎么读是家长最关心的两个问题, 又是两个紧密联系的问题, 因为它们都关系到阅读兴趣。以下是笔者在教学和家庭教育的实践中总结的几点家庭英文阅读指导:
一、首先让孩子学一些Phonics拼读法, 掌握英语中主要的音形对应规律, 在看到单词时能够“解码”出发音
词汇是中国孩子学英语的一大障碍, 习惯了中文的象形文字后就会迁徙中文学习特点, 对单词进行挨个字母的背诵, 而忽略了英文音形结合的特点。要鼓励孩子利用音形对应关系, 看到单词就像读拼音一样“拼”出单词发音。大量语言研究都发现了英语母语者在阅读时大脑会不自觉地同时加工声音信息。同时, 对于反复出现又不符合音形对应规律的高频率词汇 (High-Frequency Words) 应该多做识别练习 (Sight Reading) , 一看到这些词就要快速反应出来, 例如the, what, to。否则这些词会经常困扰小阅读者。
二、选择难易适中的读本是成功引导孩子开始英文阅读的关键
过难的故事会让孩子心生畏惧, 放弃尝试。家长可以从略低于孩子英语阅读和理解水平的读物开始入手。分级阅读丛书是最适合阅读起步的书籍, 像国内已经引进的“攀登阅读”和“培生阅读”等。分级阅读系列把每一本故事按照难易程度做了分级, 孩子只要能找到一本适合自己的书, 就可以放心地选择同级别的书, 并循序渐进逐渐挑战更高难度的书籍。安妮鲜花在《不能错过的英语启蒙》一书中介绍了“5个手指”的选书方法, 即在每一页不能超过5个不懂的词汇, 否则会影响故事理解。但是在分级阅读中, 很多初阶的故事每一页就一句话, 总共10页, 用“5”个手指的方法去选书就显得不太实用。在实践中, 笔者试过一个简单故事不超过5个生词和让孩子自己报告难易结合的方式来帮助选定合适的分级阅读起始级别, 也收到了不错的效果。在孩子的分级阅读较为熟练后, 可以试着向桥梁书 (如I Can Read系列) 和原版故事逐渐过渡。
三、阅读与朗读相结合
尽量为孩子选择带有音频的读本, 鼓励孩子在阅读后大声地模仿朗读。这不仅能促进孩子对文本的理解, 还能帮助孩子形成口语的规范和句式的模板, 能提高口语运用水平。在实践中, 笔者就发现儿童会在口语交流中不自觉地使用最近阅读文本中的词汇和句式。在流利准确朗读的基础上, 还可以把整个故事做成班级的读者剧场, 甚至拓展成儿童剧, 孩子的综合能力都能得到有效的开发。
阅读是语言输入的重要途径, 尤其对于缺少英语语言环境的中国学生来说, 这是一个非常经济可行的学习方法。英文阅读并没有想象的困难, 尝试着迈开第一步, 哪怕从一首小诗, 一首儿歌开始。

Introducing Spring Festival
The Spring Festival is the most important festival for the Chinese people and is when all family members get together, just like Christmas in the West. It originated[起源] in the Shang Dynasty from the people’s sacrifices[祭品] to gods and ancestors[祖先] at the end of an old year and the beginning of a new one.
During the last ten days before Spring Festival, store owners are busy as everybody goes out to purchase[购买] necessities for the New Year. Materials not only include edible[食用的] oil, rice, poultry[家禽], fish and meat, but also fruit, candies and all kinds of nuts. What’s more, various decorations, new clothes and shoes for the children as well as gifts for the elderly, friends and relatives are all on the list of purchasing.
Before the New Year comes, people completely clean the inside and outside of their homes. Then they begin decorating[装饰] their clean rooms with an atmosphere[气氛] of joy and festivity[欢庆]. All the door panels will be pasted with Spring Festival couplets[对联]. Also, pictures of the gods of doors and wealth will be posted on front doors to ward off[避开] evil spirits and welcome peace and abundance[充裕]. Red paper-cuttings can be seen on window glass.
According to custom, each family will stay up to count down for the New Year on the eve of the Spring Festival. Lighting firecrackers[爆竹] was once the most typical custom during the Spring Festival. People thought the banging and popping could help drive away evil spirits. Children will get money as a New Year’s gift, wrapped[包裹] up in red packets. A series of activities such as lion dancing, dragon lantern[灯笼] dancing, lantern festivals and temple fairs will be held for days. The Spring Festival then comes to an end when the Lantern Festival is over.
