Pride and Prejudice
As we all know that, nowadays ladies want to marry gentlemen who are ‘high, wealthy and handsome,’ and almost all gentlemen like ‘white, wealthy and beautiful’ women. It seems that appearance and possessions have decided marriage to some extent. However, I do believe that we can learn a lot from Pride and Prejudice. The first sentence in the movie reads, ‘A truth well known to all the world that an unmarried man in possession of a large fortune must in need of a wife." It reflects the social phenomenon at that time.Miss Bennet was eager to marry her five daughters to rich men. However, the sister of Mr.Bingley strongly opposed his plan of marrying Jane because the Bennet don’t have many possessions and their social positions are much lower than them.Only the eldest son had the privilege of inheriting his father’s possessions.Younger sons and daughters who are used to luxurious lives have no choice but marry a man or woman in possession of a large fortune to continue their comfortable lives. We can see that getting married is a way to become wealthier, particularly for women without many possessions.True love seems very fragile and lovers have to face a lot pressure from their families. The difference in social status can be a big barrier keeping lovers away from each other.Only by appreciating the marriage founded on the basis of mutual understanding and true love, can a couple
live a happy life.Elizabeth and Darcy tried so hard to persuade their families and shatter the stereotypes.Eventually, they became a couple and lead a happy life from then on.From their wonderful marriage, we can conclude that it’s true love that matters most. For all the girls, their boyfriends may not be the richest guys in the world, but as long as they really care for us and we love each other, they can marry in the future.Sometimes, beautiful appearance and wealth may blind our eyes, I think it’s high time that we should think over love and make an important choice. The movie really impresses me a lot.Love is everything, and nothing can prevent true love.In such a society where every is pursuing for a large amount of wealth and good appearance, I think we really need to calm down.
1 Definition of Human Nature
Human nature is the most distinctive feature of all the human beings that differs men from animals. As a social being, people have various needs in everyday life such as food, clothing, shelter, travel and self-improvement;people also need help and love from others. All these kinds of need combined set people different from animals. And as a social being, people are in different social stratum. As a result of their different social positions, they often have different personalities and usually take various reactions towards fame and fortune. No matter what kind of character, attitude or actions, they invariably embody human nature. In other words, human nature is the character shown by people’s manners of speech and action.
2 Human nature embodied in Pride and Prejudice
Austen sets this novel in the background of the provincial life of the late 18th-century England around three or four landed gentry families with their daily routine life:relationships with members of their own family and with their friends, dancing parties, tea parties, picnics, and gossips.By studying this kind of plots,we gradually grasp the theme of the novel.Meanwhile, the human nature embodied in this novel emerges clearly. On the whole, the human nature embodied in this novel can be divided into four styles. They are just as follows.
2.1 Pride and arrogance
As is said in the words of Mary at the beginning of the novel“human nature is particularly prone to[pride]”(张隆胜199514).In this novel, pride prevents the characters from seeing the truth of a situation and from achieving happiness in life.Pride is one of the main barriers that create an obstacle to Elizabeth and Darcy’s marriage.Darcy’s pride in his position in society leads him initially to scorn anyone outside of his own social circle and he makes a bad impression on the local people.
Even later, when Darcy makes his honest proposal to Elizabeth,he is still proud. He is not more eloquent on the subject of tenderness than of pride. His sense of her inferiority—of his being degradation—of the family obstacles is very unlikely to recommend his suit.In fact,Darcy is a generous master to his servants and tenants and a loving brother to young sister Georgiana. His seemingly excessive pride is just out of his wealth and family background.Similarly,Elizabeth’s initial prejudice against him is rooted in pride of her own quick perceptions. From the beginning of the novel,Elizabeth prides herself on her keen ability for perception.Yet,this alleged ability is often inadequate. From Elizabeth’s false judgment of Darcy and Wickham,we may also find out Elizabeth’s pride in the same respect. What’s more,it can be seen that Elizabeth is proud of Darcy later because of what he has done for Lydia.
Characters besides Darcy are also accused of having too much pride, such as Mrs.Bennet,Bingley’s sisters,Miss Darcy,Lady Catherine and so on on certain occasions. For example,Mrs.Bennet is described as proud when visiting her married daughters, and she always takes pride in having such beautiful daughters—Jane and Elizabeth. As for Bingley’s sisters, they take part in making fun of Elizabeth because of their arrogance. They laugh at Elizabeth’s dress and they look down upon Elizabeth’s whole families. Here are some cases in point:Upon hearing that Jane is ill,Elizabeth walks to Netherfield in order to nurse her sister. When she gets to Nertherfield,Miss Bingley and Mrs.Hurst(Bingley’s sister)speak ill of Elizabeth for having walked so far alone in the mud. They declare that Elizabeth’s manner is very bad indeed.Doubtless,it can be described as a mixture of pride and impertinence. As for Elizabeth’s conversation, they think there are no style,no taste, and no beauty. From their comments on Elizabeth’s petticoat, their arrogance is clearly demonstrated to us.
Mrs.Hurst’s comment on Elizabeth:“she has nothing,in short,to recommend her,but being an excellent walker;she really looked almost wild;her petticoat,I hope you saw her petticoat, six inches deep in mud,and the gown which had been let down to hide it,not doing its office.”
Miss Bingley’s comment on Elizabeth:“Her hair is so dirty,so blowsy!”(Austen 1981:25)
As for Lady Catherine’s arrogance,we may find it from her effort to force Elizabeth into a promise of never consenting to marry Darcy. As a proud and bad-mannered lady,Catherine always looks down upon the people from poor families. So she refuses to let Elizabeth marry Darcy—her nephew. This fortunately enlightens Darcy about Elizabeth’s heart and encourages him to make a second proposal, which is finally accepted by Elizabeth.Comparing the pride of Darcy and that of Catherine de Bourgh,we can see that Darcy holds his family name and estate of Pemberley with high esteem and value, but not in a conceited manner like de Bourgh. Also, the right pride is to have self-respect,honor and integrity rather than to put on airs or be unnecessarily haughty.
2.2 Worldliness and vulgarity
This kind of human nature is embodied in such characters as Mrs.Bennet, her two daughters Kitty and Lydia,Charlotte Lucas and her parents Sir William Lucas and Lady Lucas.Mrs.Bennet is the wife of Mr.Bennet and the mother of five—Elizabeth,Jane Mary,Kitty and Lydia Her main goal is to get her daughters married, and her only joys come from visits and gossip. Her vulgarity can be found in the plot of this novel here and there.Austen begins the novel with the sentence“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”to introduce the marriage theme to the reader Then she depicts the talk about marriage between Mr.Bennet and Mrs.Bennet to give us the first impression of Mrs.Bennet’s worldliness. For example, when Mrs.Bennet knows the arrival of Bingley, she is so glad for her daughters that it is enough for us to find how worldly and vulgar she is as she is so anxious to get her daughters into the upper class and she is worldly to pursue fame and fortune for her daughters;her focus revolves around money and socia position, which is also the human nature of pursuing fame and fortune. This character of Mrs.Bennet can be also found from her series of conduct at the dance party or dinner party at Netherfield.
Similarly, the worldliness of Lady Lucas and Charlotte Lucas can also be found from their money consideration in marriage.Sir William and Lady Lucas are not so rich and they don’t have enough fortune to give to their daughter Charlotte Lucas,so they immediately consent to Mr.Collins’proposal to their daughter, who first proposes to Elizabeth.Charlotte Lucas, who doesn’t know Collins very well, accepts his proposal merely out of the desire for an establishment without taking into consideration how soon tha establishment is gained.Although she is not in love with Collins and she may not live happily, she has no complaint, for she has gained financial security.
Kitty and Lydia are not only referred to as silly, but they are also regarded as the representatives of vulgarity. They spend their most time running after officers in Meryton and buying beautifu hats or showing off their conceited talents to others, which serve as good examples of their vulgarity
2.3 Vanity and Stupidity
In order to makes clear the theme that it is wrong to marry jus for money or for beauty to the reader,Austen depicts all kinds o characters.Stupidity or vanity description is also a powerful way to serve as foil to the theme. In the plot of this novel, there are many illustrations of the characters, from which the bad nature of people appears. The title of this novel refers to the way in which Darcy and Elizabeth first view each other.Darcy’s pride in his position in society leads him initially to scorn anyone outside of his own socia circle, while Elizabeth’s vanity clouds her judgment, making her prone to think ill of Darcy and to think well of Wicknam. At the Netherfield Ball,Darcy refuses to dance and keeps reserved, which hurts Elizabeth’s dignity, she,in turn, develops prejudice agains Darcy.Consequently, later on,Elizabeth blindly believes Wickham’s evil account about Darcy without question. The misunderstanding originates from Elizabeth’s vanity and costs her the chance to get married to Darcy at an earlier time and naturally reduces her to regrets.
“How despicably have I acted!”she cried,—”I,who have prided myself on my discernment!—I,who have valued myself on my abilities…”(Austen 1981:156)
Elizabeth says this to herself after she reads Darcy’s letter and realizes that she has no reason to despise him as she had.So it is a truth that vanity may sometimes cause misunderstanding.Besides, the anxiety of showing ability to others by Mary and Lydia at the ball also embodies their vanity of drawing attention. At Netherfield Ball,Mary prepares to sing after very little entreaty. But Mary’s powers are by no means fit for such a display as her voice is weak and her manners are affected very much.So Elizabeth attempts to prevent such a display by many significant looks and silent entreaties, but in vain.Mary would not understand them.Such an opportunity of exhibiting is delightful to her and she begins her song. And Lydia, the youngest Bennet daughter also admires vanity. That she loves beautiful things and honeyed words causes her elopement with Wickham who loves her very little. As for Lady Lucas and Mrs.Bennet, they compare their accomplishments in trying to get their daughters married.Their talks are always about the estate and marriage. When they meet at the Nertherfield Party,Mrs.Bennet shows off her expectation that Jane would be soon married to Mr.Bingley.And if Jane marries Bingley,it will be such a promising thing for her younger daughters,as Jane’s marriage will throw them in the way of other rich men.All these talks and thoughts embody their vanity to a certain degree.
About stupidity,Austen emphasizes the characters’stupidity in comparison with the intelligence of Elizabeth.Elizabeth is the main character of the novel,Jane Austen portrays her in this way,“with more quickness of observation and less pliancy of temper than her sister, and with a judgment too unassailed by any attention to herself, she was very little disposed to approve them.”(Austen1981:10)Or Austen wrote her“as a fine Lady—not deficient in good humor when she is pleased nor in the power of being agreeable where they chose it”.
Therefore, when such a lively intelligent girl rejects the proposal from Mr.Collins,it won’t be difficult for us to find out Mr.Collins is such a man as boastful, stupid and obsequious. His constant apologies and flattery are self-serving.When he first gets to Longbourn he compliments Mrs.Bennet on having so fine a family and daughters, saying that he has heard much about their beauty, but that,at that moment, fame has fallen short of the truth;and then he adds that he has no doubt of seeing his five cousins marry well. When he pays the second visit to Longbourn,he says the same words once again. These conducts are enough to prove his stupidity and obsequiousness. Also Kitty is depicted as a silly girl, for she has no judgment of her own and her younger sister Lydia influences her very much.Lydia, who is silly and untamed,is the representative of evil human nature too.She lacks education and always acts in a frivolous way.She has no sense of shame. After she elopes with Wickham who is later paid to marry her,she shows no remorse, but acts as if she has made a wonderful match that her sisters should be jealous of.In a way,all these descriptions of stupidity and vanity tally with the heroine’s character depiction.Always from another perspective,Austen shows us the desirable and excellent characters of the heroine—Elizabeth, that is,independence and self-esteem.
2.4 Snobbery
As the theme of this novel is about money consideration in marriage, there is no doubt that there are some depictions of snobbery in it.And it is really the case.No matter when the author sets the novel’s background and no matter however the characters behave,it does not conceal the truth that most of the time, people often pursue wealth and high position as well as seeking food for a living.
Snobbery is often a human nature that is caused by society itself. This novel’s background is set in the provincial life in England of the late 18th-century.It means that women had far less options, and they did not receive a formal education at that time.To obtain the financial security or social position for themselves or for their immediate family, women had the pressure to marry well, for marriage was the best way out for them.So in the process of stressing the theme,it is necessary and it is also certain for Austen to portray such characters as embody snobbery in her novel. On the whole, the conducts of Mrs.Bennet,Mr.Collins,Lay Catherine de Bourgh and the whole family of Charlotte Lucas all embody the nature of snobbery.
Mrs.Bennet is longing to get her daughters into the gentry society. To realize her dream, she tries her best at any cost. When Jane is invited for dinner at Netherfield,Mrs.Bennet refuses to provide her with a carriage, hoping that because it is supposed to rain Jane will have more time to stay with Bingley. As a result,Jane gets caught in the rain. She falls ill and is forced to stay at Netherfield until she recovers. The result is what Mrs.Bennet desires to see.But such a kind of wish makes us wonder:Does Mrs.Bennet love her daughter or not?She is so eager to get Jane and Bingley together that she ignores the health of Jane. What prompts her to do that are her snobbery and anxiety of getting into the upper class.Mrs.Bennet’s behavior inside and outside of the Longbourn estate is utterly annoying and shockingly snobbish.
Without an exception,Charlotte Lucas and her parents pay more attention to estate.Charlotte accepts Collins’s proposal promptly. And her explanation for her decision is simply as follows:“I only ask for a comfortable home, and considering Mr.Collins’character, connections, and situation in life,I am convinced that my chance of happiness with him is as fair as most people can boast on entering the marriage state.”(Austen 1981:94)In a sense, the estate or social position consideration in marriage is also the reflection of snobbery. As to Lady Catherine de Bourgh or the sisters of Bingley, their snobbery can be found from their attitudes towards Elizabeth.Lady Catherine despises Elizabeth only because of Elizabeth’s poor family background and she once attempts to force Elizabeth into a promise of not consenting to marry her nephew Darcy.Caroline Bingley and Louisa Hurst usually take part in making fun of Elizabeth and her lower class relatives. They laugh at Elizabeth’s hair and petticoat.Even worse, they regard her as a wild, abominable country girl who is indifferent to decorum. If their snobbish attitude stems from their own social position, then Collins always flatters Lady Catherine simply to please her and get into the gentry society, for she is his patron. From the various aspects,Austen shows us human’s instinct of pursuing fame and fortune, which is one of the human nature—snobbery.
3 Conclusion
From the above character analysis,we may draw a conclusion Pride, worldliness, vanity and snobbery are all the human nature that is embodied in Pride and Prejudice. In order to emphasize the theme of money consideration in marriage,Austen depicts all kinds of vivid characters in this novel and she is critical of the gender injustices and money consideration in marriage present in 18th-century English society in this novel. Her novel is brightened by their witty conversations and omnipresent humor. Her stories are skillfully woven together; Her plots never leave the path of realism.(王佩兰等1992:259)But what’s more important is that it is just the description of human nature that emphasizes the theme of the novel And it is just the depictions of human nature that make this nove as Austen’s most popular novel. In a word, the depictions of hu-man nature are of great significance in this novel.

My favorite book, Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austin, is a famous fiction set in England in the early 19th century. The two main characters who both had significant identities met at a party, but failed to leave nice impressions on each other due to their different social backgrounds and values. It was the conflict at the beginning that gave them more and more chances to get in touch with each other. It’s just what I appreciate in the fiction, that a love story was presented in an interesting way. What’s better, the writer used simple but meaningful language styles to reflect some kinds of deep messages from the society, such as the value of money and the inequality between the rich and the poor.
If we talk about world literature, there must be the name of pride and prejudice, because this book reflects the social values and customs of the whole country with the social feelings of a town, which is a great work.
After I borrowed this book from the library, I couldnt help but start to read it. The novel is about a small town in England. Elizabeths mother has been worrying about her daughters marriage. She wants her to marry a rich man and live a life in the upper class in the future. The story begins here. Because of the different classes and concepts, this love is very tortuous However, the ending of the story is satisfactory.
Read this book: I despise enisabers mother very much. She is so snobbish and money worship. Human happiness and marriage are not mainly determined by money, but must be based on emotion. In addition, I think the authors literary achievements are very high. Using a small town to epitomize the whole Britain is a very good writing skill and ability.
The article describes a number of daughters Bo Nate story。 Ji-an eldestdaughter, gentle kind-hearted, beautiful Keren, Bentley and rich kids at firstsight, but at the crucial moment has brought a twist。 Second daughter,Elizabeth, Qingli intelligent, ambitious, assertive, consistent with theproperty of the nobility million youth met Darcy。 Can be as arrogant Darcyeccentric, Elizabeth for his prejudice are serious, they love but refuse torecognize the obvious, but also continue to hurt each other with words, butfortunately dispelled the last mistake, married lovers。
Reading this novel, I have benefited greatly。 In our people, there are manyvery modest, but there are some arrogant people。 These arrogant people whosometimes annoying, they have eyes in the head long, others are dismissive。Indeed, the arrogance is a shorting in the environment to develop acharacter。
Chinese children from an early age by their parents as holding typical“little emperors。” If so has been from small to large, how could it notarrogant? So I think that we should not be arrogant people who have prejudices, but the more soul-searching myself, to see if they have not arrogant, aftertheir own things to learn to no longer allow parents to worry about, tired。
