Dear _,
My scholarly focus has evolved in recent years from the cultural to the intercultural. To my mind, culture, that potpourri of historical, religious, and imagined markers of identity, is no longer a satisfactory disciplinary framework. My research has turned instead to the overlapping intercultural spaces where peoples have always met and exchanged ideas, views, beliefs, and practices, and, in the process, created architecture. This is the common thread that runs through several of my latest articles, which deal with diverse topics ranging from the shaping of the taste of the Turkish medieval elite, to the conscious appropriation of classical principles in early Islamic architecture, to the changing political meaning underlying the architecture of Hassan Fathy, the father of modern vernacular architecture.
In advocating a re-conceptualization of Islamic Architecture as a coherent yet fluid, multifaceted, and open-minded field of study, I formulate three questions: How can we study a culturally defined architectural tradition without reducing it to essential and timeless categories? How can we critique the dominant architectural paradigm without totally discarding the idea of paradigm itself or turning away from its instructive examples? How can we rethink the periodization of Islamic architectural history in a more representative way without cutting it off from a comparative historical framework? These broad programs of research inform my next book project: writing a critical historiography of Islamic architecture, critical not only in pointing out the biases and shortcomings of past inquires, but also in highlighting the theoretical and ideological preconceptions underlying present inquires.
My affiliation with the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture taught me to approach Islamic architecture as a scholarly field in the process of redrawing its epistemological and methodological contours in order to become a more active and integral component of world architecture. This view is guided by a personal sense of responsibility toward the discipline and by a belief that those who specialize in a field of study should not only question what they study or how but also why they are studying it. To this end, my lecture courses and seminars present architecture in ways that illuminate its interaction with culture and society and stress the role of human agency in shaping and reshaping that interplay.
I also see the Aga Khan Program as a unique vehicle to assess, adjust, and redefine our role as educators in a fast changing global setting and to foster academic links with the producers and interpreters of architecture in different parts of the Islamic world today. What I have been trying to organize is a “community of interest” that brings together the members of our small group at MIT —students and faculty— with colleagues across the department of architecture and the Institute as well as in centers of study and research in the US and abroad.
This objective has informed my policy in choosing the participants in the three extra-academic programs I supervise: the speakers at AKPIA’s “An Evening With” lecture series, the recipients of our travel grants, and the postdoctoral researchers in our visiting scholars programs. In this intellectual network, the role that I assigned to myself some years ago as interpreter of Islamic architecture and urbanism past and present has expanded in scope and methods but it certainly has not lost its strong humanistic grounding.
Yours sincerely,

Born in Beijing, China’s political capital, cultural center and economic hub, and nurtured in a well-cultured family and an empowering community, I have developed a meaningful outlook on lie. I identify myself with such values that one gives meaning to life when one lives to give. Success stories of my parents , relatives and friends along their career-path have entrenched my belief in being independent and confident as a contributing memeber of the community.
As I look back on early days of my schooling , I am just as grateful to my working parents for having sent me to one of the best boarding schools in Beijing where I received quality primary education and learned to appreciate independence. As I recall , being independent was probably the biggest asset I gained as a teenager with the absence of parental guardianship for most of those 6 years. After I upgraded to secondary school, I offered to go to school by bike. Though hesitant at first, my parents gave their well-thought-out consent to the 15-km ride average Chinese parents would simply veto in the first place given the “one-child policy”and subsequent “little emperors” pampered by parents and grandparents. Thankfully, that day-to-day routine bike trip,rain or sunshine,tempered my strong character. I have been holding myself to highest standards, academically and physically from primary school days through to college life. I have grown up all these years amongst top cohorts and have been exposed to varied horizons and dimensions of school life in and outside of classroom. I am perfectly healthy and stong with a sharp mind and demonstrated commitment to teamwork. I was handpicked to play for school baseball team when I was in primary school. Back then, my proven leadership and excellent skills in the field assured my coach that I was born to be a team leader. And I did justice to his well-timed appointment by heading a team of Beijing to compete in Shanghai and Hong Kong several times. And the strong track record of out outstanding performances each time still fills me with pride and excitement today. During one match tour to Hong Kong in the 1990s, I was immediatel exposed to the enviable luxury and prosperity of the city,the dynamic economic center of Asia. That trip awakened me ,for the first time, to the value of wealth and finance. And it was that very journey to the thriving metropolis that shaped my ambition to be a financer.
Years later,when the colleg entrance exam came,that moment of life and death for most of senior high school students in China,my top preference was Finance Colllege of Beijing Technology and Business Unversity. The result came as a sad surprise as I was admitted to Computer Science College instead. But I stuck with my dream major and decided to minor in finance. I have since worked hard to equip myself with systematic knowledge of finance. As a result , I amd now well on my way to graduation with double degrees in both computer science and finance in .
During my college days,I led my cohorts in starting up a micro company as I dabbled into the real business world. We settled for newspaper as our maiden attempt.. As a new horn,I took a hands-on approach, from editing to circulating, from cost control to market survey. My strong leadership and sunergy of the entire team kept this mini organization going pretty well in its infancy. Yet inexperience in operation and cost management led to a failed business in the end. But I saw the silver lining in the failed venture. I now know more about where I need to work on. When I was a little boy, my parents taught me how to manage money in the safest way. They helped me put my pocket money in the bank and get interest as a return. Now, as a grown-up already,I recognize that systematic learning and book knowledge can truely help me know how much more about what finance is all about. Naturally, as one’s knowledge about swimming increases, the desire to swim in the sea grows. Yet, with more academic exposure, I have come to realize how I am ill-equipped with the knowledge needed to stay afloat in the trubulent sea of finance. That self-conscious humbleness versus the profundiy of finance as a much-respected discipline has led me to opt for further study in the US,home to a number of world-class colleges of finance.
After meticulous comparision and cross-checking, I have settled for Clark University,the birthplace of the first-ever graduate school in the US. I trust that demanding academic standards here and ,best of all ,great mastermind of finance that Clark can offer will undoubtedly broaden my horizon and update my vision as financier of the future. To me,Clark is the best and right place that can surely make the difference, academically and professionally alike. I am more than anxious to embrace those best minds in Clark and contribute my humble part to its huge wealth of knowledge and innovative ideas. I am therefore very much looking forward to a positive reply from Clark, my dream campus. May that offer come just in time for my journey towards a rewading learning experience in one of the greatest colleges in the US.

I am a student, graduated from BaoYang middle school, Nanning, GuangXi autonomous region, in 2006. I am still studying in high school now, because I was not enrolled by the ideal university last year. Recently, I have a dream to study abroad. Then I search online and find that it is more convenient and suitable for me to go to New Zealand for study. First, New Zealand is a multicultural country, which has the most advanced education in the world. Second, the tuition is lower than other countries’, which I think is mo
re reasonable for me. Finally, the climate of New Zealand is similar with the climate of the South of China. Considering above reasons, I told my parents my plan on going to New Zealand for study, and my parent agreed with me.
As a girl, I like preschool education since I was young. Nowadays, Chinese parents, who want their children to get better education, pay more attention to preschool education. If I study specialized curriculums on preschool education, I will go back China and work hard on preschool education after leaving college.
My plan is as follows: first, I plan to study English in language institute for about a half year in New Zealand. Then, I will study specialized curriculums on preschool education.
I believe I have the ability of study abroad, because I have finished all high school curriculums. Besides, my parents both have job and have rich income, so they will support me to finish my study. After finishing my study, I will return to my homeland and work on preschool education, so as to realize my life value.

Dear Sir or Madam,
At the request of University of Denver, my student in Zhengzhou 19th High School, I’m providing this reference, which I hope can be useful for you to review her application to your undergraduate program.
I have been the Chinese teacher and class director in Zhengzhou 19th High School for more than ten years. We are one of the most famous and high-quality high schools in the whole city, the faculties in our school are all renowned and highly-experienced. Though I’m relatively young in the school, I have lots of experience in Chinese teaching and student managing. I have been titled the outstanding young teacher and class-director by school and city.
Yadi Wang came to my class in September 2006, the semester she entered our school. I know she is talent in music. She used to performance flute in our school activities, such as in talent show. In , she passed the high level test of FLUTE LEVEL 8. She loves music that is all her classmates and school teachers know.
YADI WANG had special leadership and friendship in my class. Once we were about to take part in our school’s drama festival. We were supposed to play a Chinese traditional drama –BAIMAONU. I analyzed some key plots and roles of this drama to my students, and then left all the other works to their own. YADI WANG was in charge of the directing and casting. It was not an easy job as it may sound. The enthusiasm made everybody ask for the leading roles, but no one was willing to take these minor ones. So YADI WANG decided to run an audition. Combined the performance in the audition and students’ actual characteristics, YADI WANG assigned everyone the most suitable role. And then, she divided the crew into several groups. Different groups rehearsed in different places at the same time. And the leading actors were the strings to connect these groups into a collectivity. Through this way, it saved lots of time, which was the scarcest thing to middle school students, to get everybody into his role. And before the final performance, she just needed to call all the actors together for a preview for once or twice. She has done even better than I had expected.
Another time was in a seminar, we ran a debate competition about teacher’s professional ethics. YADI WANG was the leading debater of the con side. During the debate, she showed her wide knowledge and eloquence. She used lots of proverbs, history figures and examples to support her stand, and every word of her was incisive to get to the point, and also full of humors. Her performance won both her teammates and opponents’ admiration.
Her positivity and versatility also can be found in many other aspects. She is ours school’s famous piano player who is always invited to play in many occasions. She knows the traditional skill of calligraphy writing, which she has been practicing from very small. During weekends or vacations, the “Holiday Working Team” she leads can always be found doing many community services. Normally, in order to get more students to participate in class’s management, the student cadre will change every semester or two, by student vote. But Yadi Wang has won all the elections by now, so she continued to be the monitor from the beginning of our class to today, and very likely to the graduation. All her classmates have approbated her ability, characteristics and performance. She is already a model in the class.
In this reference, I didn’t mention much about Yadi Wang’s grade, which I believe you can easily find was so outstanding from her transcripts and her ranking (25th out of 1560 students), because I’d like to give you something that you cannot find from these documents but I think is equally important to contribute to her excellence. I do hope, according to my recommendation, you could give her a favorable review. Thank you! Please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely Yours
Molly Yu

As a child I often accompanied my father to his small coin shop and spent hours watching him work. When I was older, I sometimes set up displays, waited on customers, and even balanced the books. This experience instilled in me the desire to own and manage my own business someday, yet I understand that the business world today is more complex. This complexity requires more education, and with that in mind, I am applying to the Master’s of Business Administration program at Indiana University Bloomington (IUB).
In addition to my helping out in my father’s business, I have had numerous other work experiences that further enhance my qualifications for this program. My resume enumerates the various positions I have held at Kerasotes Theaters, Chili’s restaurants, and Indiana University’s new Student Recreational Sports Center (SRSC), and what all of these positions have in common is an emphasis on serving the public effectively. Further, as an assistant manager at the Showplace 11 and a staff coordinator at the SRSC, I have gained valuable expertise in managing employees and creating work schedules. Both of these positions have allowed me to develop my sales and people skills, which are extremely important in an increasingly service-driven marketplace.
Not all of my work experience has been as a paid employee. Part of my volunteering experience at Middleway House, the local battered women’s shelter, involved extensive work on computers, including word processing, organizing databases and creating spreadsheets. Also, I recently participated in an internship program for academic credit with the Eli Lilly corporation in the personnel division. As a management intern, I was able to watch the workings of a major corporation up close and would like the opportunity to combine my experiences with the theoretical background available in the MBA program at IUB, with its emphasis on computers, marketing and human resources.
My successful internship is one element of my overall academic success as an undergraduate here at IUB, yet I have also made time for a variety of extracurricular activities, including working for my sorority and competing in intramural basketball. My positive experiences here have resulted in my desire to stay in Bloomington to continue my academic endeavors; furthermore, continuing my education here would allow me to make important business contacts, with the career goal of opening my own computer consulting firm in the Midwest.

(1)泰语课程类:属于必修课(每周两节);
(2)外语课程类:和国内不同的是,泰国这门课程有英、法、德、日、阿拉伯语等多种语言,但是选择上还是有限制的,每人最多可选两种;
(3)社会教育课程类:属于选修课程。这门课程包含了地理、历史、政治、道德、社会学、经济学、法学、人口学和环境保护等,类别非常的丰富多样;
(4)卫生体育课程类:这门课既有必修课也有选修课;
(5)数学课程类:分为数学和应用数学;
(6)自然科学课程类:包含了物理、生物、化学、应用科学等这类课程;
(7)应用科学课程类:包含了工业技术、农业、家政学、手工艺学等;
(8)艺术课程类:有绘画、泰国艺术、装饰艺术、泰国歌曲、音乐、时代音乐及陶器、戏剧表演;
(9)基础职业技术类:有工业技术、农业、家政、商业、手工业和艺术等;
(1)去泰国学生的选择非常的多样,而且所学知识非常的丰富,可以增强学生全方位的知识,使学生涉及的知识面非常广;
(2)和国内不同的是,泰国的中学设立了选修课,并且实行学分制,不仅加强了对学生的管理,也增加了学生的知识面,让学生可以根据自己的兴趣爱好来选择自己喜欢的课程;
(3)课程设置多样化,并且非常灵活,站在学生的立场、兼顾学生的多样性发展需要;
泰式面条有几种面条可选,细粉、宽粉、粉丝、黄面条、黄色水饺等;
汤料口味有清汤,黑汤和冬阴功味儿三种;
Dear _,
Ever since I have had the ability to understand it, I have been fascinated by the English language. As a child, I would either be writing, reading or telling stories and ever sine then, have read a wide variety of both fiction and non-fiction texts from a variety of genres and eras.
This passion for language has led me to many different extra-curricular activities. For the past four years, I have attended a Youth Theatre each week where we concentrate very much on both improvised and scripted drama but also have done work on stage management, stage make-up, singing, and signed singing (an interest which begun with my learning of both violin and double bass to grade 4 standard).
With this same organisation, I have volunteered for the past three years at one of the children’s groups where I work helping with drama, music and art. It was with this same organisation that I decided to learn Sign Language.I have recently gained my British Sign Language Level 1 certificate and am now beginning a Level 2 course. I began learning Sign Language at the same time as starting my A-Level in English Language and Literature, a course I have found extremely interesting. Taking these two courses concurrently was very exciting for me as learning more about the linguistics of the English Language enabled me to make comparisons between the two languages.
These interests have led me to this course which I not only feel suits my needs and interests aptly, but also excites me in its course content. Although I’ve enjoyed all of my A-Level English Language and Literature course but have found a few parts of it particularly interesting. I specifically enjoyed our coursework tasks for our AS Level as it included writing a piece of original fiction, an aspect of English which I have always enjoyed. I also enjoyed the task of performing a monologue as I have missed not being able to study drama as a subject.
I try to follow my interests outside of school and so attend a wide variety of theatre productions, art exhibitions, musical performances and subject related lectures. When studying psychology last year, I attended a large psychology conference with a variety of speakers which was both helpful and interesting. Last year I also attended an ‘art master class’ organised with Middlesex University and with nine other students, it gave more opportunity for more detailed and involved discussions. I have not yet had the opportunity to attend an English related lecture but look forward to a study day in March which will aid me with my study of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra.
Alongside this and my voluntary work with the drama organisation, I have worked in a variety of jobs which have all helped to develop my sense of responsibility as they were dependent on both teamwork and co-operation but also my use of initiative.I have chosen to defer my entry to as I plan to complete a voluntary teaching placement in Africa. The prospect of this placement excites me as it will give me the opportunity to travel, to meet new people, to experience new cultures, and, above all, help out where much help is needed. I feel that taking a gap year is going to benefit me greatly as it will enable me to gain valuable life skills that will benefit me both at university but also in whatever I choose to do following university whether it be a postgraduate course or work.
Yours sincerely,
xuexila
