一、反义词的定义及分类

传统语义学认为, 反义词是词义相反的词, 而现代语义学强调, 词与词之间存在着相反或对立的语义关系是反义关系。词义相反或对立的词叫做反义词。对于反义词的分类, 语言学界并不统一, 但最为广泛接受的、概括性最强的是将其分为互补反义词、级差反义词和逆向反义词。

1. 互补反义词。

互补反义又称二元反义, 是一种狭义的反义关系。这种反义关系由两个相对的元素组成, 两者之间没有任何的中间值, 是一种非此即彼的关系。互补反义词表现的是一种矛盾对立的关系。一个词被否定, 就意味着另一个词被肯定, 反之亦然。

2. 级差反义词。

级差反义词是一种语义相反但语势可变的反义词。两个词处于轴线的两极, 两极之间存在着某种中间状态, 也就是说它们有程度之分, 两级之间呈一种逐渐递增或递减的关系。这类反义词的词对在语义上互不相容, 但并不相互矛盾和相互排斥。

3. 逆向反义词。

逆向反义词在词义上是反向对立的关系, 即一个词描述两种事物间的某种关系, 而另一个词从相反方向描述这两种事物间的同样的关系。这些反向对立关系主要表现在行为进程上、社会关系上和方位上。

二、标记概念

标记性是结构主义语言学的一个重要概念, 由布拉格学派的Jakobson和Trubetzkoy首创于20世纪30年代。标记性起源于音素分析中, 现在已被广泛运用到语言分析的各个层面。广义地讲, 语言标记性是指语言范畴相关关系对立项之间的不平等关系, 对立中的一个成分因具有某种特性而被赋予正值, 而另一个没有这种特性的成分则被赋予负值或中和值。这种对立的被赋予正值的成分称为标记项, 被赋予负值或中和值的成分则称为无标记项。有标记项具有非普遍的、有倾向的特性, 传达一种明确的、限定的概念, 无标记项具有普遍的、中立的特性, 对概念传达不置可否。即有标记项肯定传达某个信息, 无标记项却未必传达某个信息:可以认为传达, 也可以认为不传达, 或与此无关。

三、反义词标记性分析

1. 互补反义词的标记性

互补反义词以动词和形容词居多, 但是这两类反义词一般都没有标记性的区分。具有标记性区分的互补反义词主要是那些指称高级动物的名词反义词。由于它们区分性别, 因此指称它们的互补反义词多以性别为意义相反的基础。在这类反义词中, 无标记项的一方通常是多义词, 具有泛指和特指两个意义;而有标记项只有特指一个意义。以dog和bitch为例, dog既可以泛指“狗”又可以特指“雄狗”, bitch只能特指“雌狗”。因此, dog是无标记项, 而bitch是有标记项。换句话说, 无标记项的词义比有标记项宽泛, 前者既可不区分性别地泛指所有成员, 又可指称相关实体中某一性别的成员, 而后者只能指称该实体中另一性别的成员。

在一般语境中, 这类反义词中的无标记项多取其“泛指”的意义, 事实上, 这种意义也是它们最主要的词义。请看下面这句话:He loves dogs.这句话只是告诉我们“他喜欢狗”, 至于是雄狗还是雌狗, 我们并不知道。这里的“dog”取其泛指意义, 是一个统称雄狗、雌狗的上义词。但是, 在无标记项与有标记项相对使用的语境中, 无标记项往往取其“特指”的意义。如下句:It is a dog, not a bitch.在这句话中, 无标记项dog和有标记项bitch对比使用, 由于这种对比是在同一层面的同质事物间进行的, 所以这里的“dog”的含义是特指雄狗, 这实际上也是取了“狗”的一个下义词意义。

在这些以性别为意义相反基础的互补反义词中, 无标记项的确定不是非常规则, 有时是以雄性一方为无标记项, 如dog和bitch中的dog, man和woman中的man等;有时又以雌性一方为无标记项, 如cock和hen中的hen, bul和cow中的cow等。根据词源学, 在其他条件相同的情况下, 先出现并使用的, 也就是受到重视的应该是无标记项, 相应的有标记项是为了表达精确而后来创造并使用的。于是, 我们可以对无标记项的不规则分配现象这样解释:以凶猛见长的动物、野兽等, 其雄性一方往往占主导地位, 因此无标记项落在雄性上;由于多种原因, 女性多受到性别歧视, 而男性则被视为人类世界的主导者, 因此无标记项也是男性一方;而对于家禽家畜, 主要饲养的还是雌性动物, 雄性的饲养数量远远小于雌性的数量, 因此无标记项实现在雌性一方。

在互补反义词中, 不同的无标记项的标记程度是不同的, 有些无标记程度高, 有些则低。我们可以用“The+无标记词+is a (an) +有标记词”的句型来区分无标记程度的高低。

2. 级差反义词的标记性

级差反义词大部分是形容词, 只有少数是动词, 它的标记现象具有普遍性。在级差反义词中, 无标记项通常表现为正面的、积极意义的、量多的高值, 而有标记项则常常为表现消极意义的、量少的低值。比如high和low中的high, wide和narrow中的wide, good和bad中的good, 均为无标记项。为什么会出现这种情况呢?首先, 从认知角度来说, 有特点的、数量多的事物更容易引起人们的注意, 在信息处理中更容易被识别和贮存。表现在语言上, 就是那些价值高的词成为无标记项, 而价值低的词则成为有标记项。其次, 在人类社会, 普遍存在以肯定现象为取向的价值观念和心理习惯。心理语言学的实验证明, 儿童对肯定评价的掌握通常较早, 使用也更频繁 (至少是在10岁以前) 。令人愉快的词语更容易记住, 能刺激更多的联想。正是以肯定现象为取向的价值观念和心理习惯使得表示积极意义的词语为无标记项, 而表示消极意义的词语为有标记项。最后, 从语用的角度考虑, 在交谈中, 为了给对方留面子, 谈话者会较多地使用表示肯定评价的词语, 而较少使用表示否定评价的词语。即便是在指出对方缺点, 或对缺点进行批评时, 通常也不太会直接使用贬义词, 而是用not加褒义词来代替, 或者干脆使用委婉语。正是这种交谈心理和语用策略使得人们使用积极词语的频率大大超过了使用消极词语的频率, 久而久之, 反映在语言上, 积极词语就成了无标记项。

上海外国语大学教授、中国认知语言学研究会会长束定芳认为, 在级差反义词中, “通常只有无标记的形容词可以用来对所描述的性质的程度进行提问”。如下面两句话:A.How far is it from Beijing to Luoyang?B.How near is it from Beijing to Luoyang?在far和near这对级差反义词中, far是无标记项, 因此句A用How far进行提问合情合理, 其实这是形成了中和性语境, 把far原来的意义给中和掉了。说话者这样提问不再带有任何的感情色彩, 只是单纯的询问距离;而句B用有标记项进行提问, 效果就大不相同了。由于有标记项的词义比较绝对, 相对于无标记项来说比较有“力度”, 因此它们的意义中和不了。句B实际上在询问距离的同时, 暗含了说话者的感情色彩, 即从北京到洛阳是非常近的。

3. 逆向反义词的标记性

对于逆向反义词标记性进行讨论的文献并不多。在研究逆向反义词标记现象时笔者发现, 当逆向反义词成对出现时, 人们往往倾向于把反义词对中的某一方置于前, 另一方置于后。而且这种倾向具有普遍性和持久性, 是被持同种语言的多数人所接受并运用的。比如, 我们常说“come and go”“above and below”, 却很少有人反过来说。英国语言学家利奇用支配性的概念解释了这种现象。他认为, 逆向反义词的标记性实际上表现为一种支配性。按照这种说法, 上例中的come和above分别在它们各自的反义词对中具有支配地位, 因而可把它们视为无标记项。

一、《内经》平行语料库

平行语料库 (parallel corpus) 是为搜集某种语言的原语文本及目的语文本而创建的语料库。平行语料库是语言学家用以对比两个文本在词汇、句子和文本等层面上的差异。[1]南京中医药大学较早建立了《内经》语料库, 不断有专家学者在语料库的基础上研究中医典籍的翻译, 成绩不菲。笔者通过多年研究, 以李照国的英译本为句子对照, 将汉语及其他的全英译本的前34章在相关软件的辅助下进行句对齐, 以便迅速在庞大的汉语版本中找到相对应的汉英译文。图1是笔者借助软件Ultra Edit获得的10个“逆从”实例, 确定之后逆从的汉英对照即可轻易得之。

二、《内经》反义词分析

反义词是在一种语言的共时范畴内, 在一定的义位上, 语义相反或相对的词。[2]反义词经常处于并举、对待位置, 包括绝对反义词和相对反义词“有助于义位的判定, 有助于词义的辨析, 有助于了解词义的发展演变”[3]。而最早研究《内经》中反义词的是钱超尘, 统计出174对反义词, 以形容词最多, 动词次之, 名词更次之, 还有少量的副词反义词, [4]他说《内经》中的反义词具有相当大的稳固性, 但还有一些反义词之间的关系又不是绝对固定的。后来黄巧玲通过多角度的分析和总结, 指出《内经》中有239组反义词[5], 其多成对使用, 或反义连文, 或反义对文, 呈现出辐射交叉和不平衡状态, 聚合复杂多变, 且联合式复合词数量只有24个。如阴阳、逆从等反义连文现象在《内经》中出现不止50次之多, 而且不仅词性连意思也大都完全不同, 应引起足够的重视。

三、“逆从”的连文现象的英译

“逆从”连文现象在《内经》前34章出现10次, 其中名词7次, 动词3次, 表1为三位译者在全文英译中“逆从”的相应译文, 分别采取了不同的策略进行翻译。

根据上下文语境, “逆从”不管是名词还是动词, 其意义全然不同, 倪多采取意译加以解释说明, 而李和威斯翻译时, 多直译, 即翻译时对应词序、调整词序, 亦有因境择义的情况;由于“逆从”在原语中有特指, 故李译中又增加了音译的方法。如“逆从阴阳”中“逆从”意为顺应阴阳的变化, 即在语境中偏重于“从”, 李译和威译都较为贴切, 而“脉有逆从四时”与“逆从阴阳”一致, 二位译者却将“逆”和“从”分别直译, 则较为不妥。又如“此阴阳反作, 病之逆从也。”威斯调整词性, 将名词“逆从”反义动词结构, 准确无误。

由于医学知识结构的不同, 译文中不乏理解偏颇之处, 尤其是当“逆从”作为名词时, 亦有将动词翻译为名词的情况。例如:当“逆从”指脉象、经络、下针时, 意义则不可丝毫有误, 否则目的语语义将无法准确传达, 如威斯的翻译, “obedience or disobedience”“a place and a name”“be stubborn or curable”, 而李译则采取音译加释的办法, 准确简洁, 不失原语之风骨。

《内经》中像“逆从”这样的反义连文现象比比皆是, 不同译者采取不同的翻译策略。从“逆从”的翻译实例可以看出, 上下文语境对于准确传播中医文化的重要性, 译者可以采取词序对应、词序调整、词性改变、因境择义等各种翻译策略。
