2015 年浙江省高考理科综合卷第22 题(以下简称浙江卷第22 题) 的图2 给学生展示了四只电表所显示的通过调节滑动变阻器所得到的两组电流表与电压表的示数(见图1),要求学生根据这四个示数来计算小灯泡在滑动变阻器调节前后的电阻值.这题贴近实际(表的示数是根据实际拍摄的),考查学生在测量中所表现出来的操作能力(读数和计算),更为重要的是,它强调了测量在物理学中的重要性.可是,在所给出的权威性参考答案中,[3]笔者认为其在测量和误差理论方面存在问题.如果以此答案为评分标准,势必会导致阅卷中的差错和不公平,更为重要的是,它会使人们对测量原理和物理学的本质产生误解.
为此,本文将从信息、测量和误差的基本理论着手,通过对浙江卷第22 题的参考答案的分析,来阐述物理学作为一门测量科学的本质,从而引起物理课程标准的制订者、物理教材编写者和广大物理教师对测量教学在物理教育中的重要性的关注.
二、测量是获取信息的过程
根据信息学的原理,人们通过一定的方式向信息源获取一定量的信息. 信息源所含的符号越多,人们每得到一个符号所获取的信息量就越多.因此,在信息学中,信息量的单位1 比特是这样定义的:一个具有两种不同符号的信息源每发射一个符号所传递的信息量为1 比特. 比如,交通信号灯(红-绿灯) 是一个含有两种不同符号的信息源.当我们接收到其中一个符号时,比如绿灯亮时,我们就获得了1 比特的信息量.同理,一个具有4 种不同符号的信息源每发射一个符号所传递的信息量为2 比特.以此类推,一个具有Z种不同符号的信息源每发射一个符号所传递的信息量H为:

当我们测量某个物理量时,我们就从测量工具那里得到了一定量的信息.比如,一台厨房用的台秤最多可称2 千克的质量,它的最小读数是10 克.因而,关于“物体的质量有多大”的问题,这台台秤可以做出200 种不同的回答.那么,相应的符号数为200,与答案相应的信息量约为8 比特.再比如,一般的温度计的精确度为1℃. 如果它的测量范围是-30℃到90℃,则相应的符号数为120 个.当我们测得一个温度值时,我们就接收到了7 比特的信息.测量仪器的精确度越高,测得一个值时所接收的信息量就越多.粗略地说,一个测量值所对应的信息量大约为10 比特.[4]
现行中学物理课程标准和教材中没有涉及信息学的知识,这就导致教师无法向学生讲清测量的这一信息学本质.在普通高中物理课程标准[5]和现行普通高中物理教材[6]中,教师和学生只能笼统地知道物理学是一门实验科学,他们不会关注到物理实验的本质是测量,而测量是获取信息的过程.有些师生甚至对物理学形成这样的印象:物理定律是数学推导的结果,物理学家们所做的工作仅仅是像做习题一样的一种数学演算.为此,我们强烈建议,在高中物理课程标准和教材中,应适当引入信息学的基本知识,从而使教师和学生加深对物理学本质的理解.
三、测量值总是一个区间
在解释为什么需要测量时,我们通常抱有这样的观念:在测量前这个值是未知的,在测量后这个值是已知的.实际上,这是一个错误的观念.首先,在测量前我们对物理量的值并不是一点也不知道.其次,在测量后我们并不知道物理量的真实值.测量值总是一个区间(图2).在用仪器测量前,我们知道这个值是某一较大的区间. 在用仪器测量后,我们仍只知道这个值是某一区间,但这个区间比用仪器测量前的要小了.如果用仪器测量后这个区间明显地缩小了,我们说这是一个好的测量;如果这个区间只缩小了一点点,我们说这是一个不好的测量,或不精密的测量.
人本身也是一个测量工具,人通过感官来“估计”也是一种测量,也能获得信息.物理学虽然是一门定量科学,但它并不是一门精确的科学.物理学家并不能确定某个物理量的真实值,而只能借用精密的测量仪器和根据他们的判断能力来缩小物理量的测量值的区间,从而获取更多的信息.
根据这一考虑,我们可以来定义一个表征对量X测量的好坏的数,这个数就是测量前后的两个区间的比值,即
式中b表示测量前(before),a表示测量后(after).我们把上式的二进制对数(binary logarithm)定义为一个量H:[7]
由于H表示在测量中所获得的信息量,所以它的单位为信息量的单位.这个量告诉我们,在测量中,物理量的值的信息量增加了多少比特(bit).比如,在测量一支铅笔的长度时,假定在用仪器测量前我们用肉眼测出这支笔的长度不会小于10cm,也不会大于20cm.用尺子测量后我们知道这支笔的长度在10.5cm和10.6cm之间. 我们来计算在用尺子测量这支铅笔的长度中所获得的信息量:

根据浙江卷第22 题所给出的电表示数和它们的最小刻度值(电流表为0.01A,电压表为0.05V),我们可以分别读出相应的测量值的区间为:

而在权威发布的参考答案中所给出的不是一个区间,而是四个值:0.10A、0.24A、0.27V和2.00V.显然,如果学生的答案落在上述区间内,我们应认为其答案是对的.尤其是对于第4 只表的读数(即U1的测量值),参考答案给出了“0.27V”.如果学生读出0.25V、0.26V或0.28V是否会被认为是错的呢?
四、误差传播是有规律的
在现行教材中,普遍把测量值跟被测物理量的真实值之间的差异叫作误差(error).[6]根据前面所述,真实值是不存在的,我们所能测得的总是一个区间.误差包括系统误差(systematic error)和偶然误差(random error),而系统误差又包括仪器误差、理论(方法)误差和个人误差.在某次直接测量中,我们可以根据测量仪器的精确度知道此仪器所导致的仪器误差.比如,在用上面所提到的四只表测量时,仅由这些表所产生的绝对误差分别为 δI1=δI2=0.01A,δU1=δU2=0.05V.
这里所指的绝对误差,其实就是某一测量值的不确定范围的一半(uncertainty).它不同于对同一物理量的两个测量值之间的差异(discrepancy)(图3).因此,对某个量多次测量后,可以用其平均值来代表所有测量值.测量次数越多,这个平均值与任何一次测量值之间的差异会越小.然而,不管测量次数有多少,最后只能用一个值(平均值)来代表这个量的测量值.
根据相应的公式通过对直接测量值的计算得到某一物理量的值,这一过程叫作间接测量.直接测量值的误差会在计算过程中进一步传播,并产生新的误差,这一过程叫作误差传播(error propagation).对于不同的计算公式,误差传播的规律是不同的.下面是几个常用的误差传播公式:
