Translate the following text from English into Chinese. Write your translation on ANSWER SHEET 2. (15 points)

Most people would define optimism as endlessly happy, with a glass that’s perpetually half fall. But that’s exactly the kind of false deerfulness that positive psychologists wouldn’t recommend. “Healthy optimists means being in touch with reality.” says Tal Ben-Shahar, a Harvard professor, According to Ben- Shalar, realistic optimists are these who make the best of things that happen, but not those who believe everything happens for the best.

Ben-Shalar uses three optimistic exercisers. When he feels down-sag, after giving a bad lecture-he grants himself permission to be human. He reminds himself that mot every lecture can be a Nobel winner; some will be less effective than others. Next is reconstruction, He analyzes the weak lecture, leaning lessons, for the future about what works and what doesn’t. Finally, there is perspective, which involves acknowledging that in the ground scheme of life, one lecture really doesn’t matter.

Children will play with dolls equipped with personality chips, computers with inbuilt personalities will be regarded as workmates rather than tools, relaxation will be in front of smelltelevision, and the digital age will have arrived.(儿童将与装有个性芯片的玩具娃娃玩耍,具有个性内置的计算机将被视为工作伙伴而不是工具,人们将在气味电视前休闲,到那时数字时代就到来了。)

Interest in historical methods had arisen less through externa challenge to the validity of history as an intellectual discipline and more from internal quarrels among historians themselves.(人们对历史研究方法产生了兴趣,这与其说是因为外部对历史作为一门知识学科的有效性提出了挑战,还不如说是因为历史学家内部发生了争吵)。

例如(2010考研真题50题):It tends to ignore, and thus eventually to eliminate, many elements in the land community that lack commercial value, but that are essential to its healthy functioning. 这句中的“it”指上文的“a system of conservation based solely on economic self-interest”(一个基于利己利益的保护体制),而后面的两个关系代词“that”均指代先行词“elements”。

They wanted a generation of Americans conditioned to loyalty and duty. 再如:ardent loyalty(赤胆忠心),careful consideration(深思熟虑),feed on fancies(画饼充饥),await with great anxiety(望穿秋水),perfect harmony(水乳交融),total exhaustion(筋疲力竭)等。

文章的第一段往往是整篇文章的主题所在,下面我们来看本次节选文章的第一段:“One basic weakness in a conservation system based wholly on economic motives is that most members of the land community have no economic value. Yet these creatures are members of the biotic community and, if its stability depends on its integrity, they are entitled to continuance.”

(46) Scientists jumped to the rescue with some distinctly shaky evidence to the effect that insects would eat us up if birds failed to control them.

1.句子主干为“scientists jumped to the rescue”,句中with引导伴随状语,that引导的是evidence的同位语从句,if 引导的是同位语从句中的条件状语从句。

4.to the effect that ...:本词组较难,在历年真题中并未涉及,英文释义为“with the meaning of”,可译为“意思是……,大意是说……”。

由up构成的词组曾在考研英语中出现过很多次,如take up、back up、put up with、go up、clean up、give up、stand up、come up、keep up、bring up、hold up、warm up等。

(47) ... but we have at least drawn nearer the point of admitting that birds should continue as a matter of intrinsic right, regardless of the presence or absence of economic advantage to us.

句子主干为“we have drawn nearer the point”,句中“of admitting that …intrinsic right”作后置定语修饰point,regardless of引导让步状语。

本词组引导让步状语,在历年真题中曾多次出现过,如2006年考研英语阅读理解第一篇中的一句:“… these were stores anyone could enter, regardless of class or background.”(……

(48) Time was when biologists somewhat overworked the evidence that these creatures preserve the health of game by killing the physically weak, or that they prey only on “worthless species”.

1.句子主干为“time was when biologists somewhat overworked the evidence”,两个that引导的同位语从句由or连接,都用来修饰evidence。

2.time was when...:意思是“曾几何时……”。此词组为固定结构,是“there was a time when ...”

4.preserve the health of game:意思是“保持猎物种群的健康”。

(49) In Europe, where forestry is ecologically more advanced, the noncommercial tree species are recognized as members of the native forest community, to be preserved as such, within reason.

1.句子主干为“the noncommercial tree species are recognized as members”,句中where引导的定语从句修饰Europe。

2.forestry is ecologically more advanced:意思是“林业生态比较发达”。

3.noncommercial tree:

本短语是考研英语中的核心短语,在考研英语真题中曾多次出现,如2007年考研英语翻译文章的首句中就出现了这个短语:“The study of law has been recognized for centuries as a basic intellectual discipline in European universities.”(几个世纪以来,在欧洲的大学中,法律学习一直被视为一门基本学科。)

1996年考研英语阅读理解第三篇文章的末段出现过该词组:“The ‘shareholder’ as such had no knowledge of the lives, thoughts or needs of the workmen employed by the company in which he held shares….”(这样的股东丝毫不了解他所持股公司里工人们的生活、思想或需求……)

6.within reason:

(50) It tends to ignore, and thus eventually to eliminate, many elements in the land community that lack commercial value, but that are essential to its healthy functioning.

句子主干为“it tends to ignore, and thus eventually to eliminate many elements”,两个that引导的定语从句由but连接,都修饰elements。另外考生要明白,句中的it指代的是此句话上一句(a system of conservation based solely on economic self-interest is hopelessly lopsided)中的a system。

3.commercial value:

4.be essential to:意思是“……

5.healthy functioning:

It‘s no surprise that Jennifer Senior’s insightful, provocative magazine cover story, “I love My Children, I Hate My Life,” is arousing much chatter – nothing gets people talking like the suggestion that child rearing is anything less than a completely fulfilling, life-enriching experience. Rather than concluding that children make parents either happy or miserable, Senior suggests we need to redefine happiness: instead of thinking of it as something that can be measured by moment-to-moment joy, we should consider being happy as a past-tense condition. Even though the day-to-day experience of raising kids can be soul-crushingly hard, Senior writes that “the very things that in the moment dampen our moods can later be sources of intense gratification and delight.”

The magazine cover showing an attractive mother holding a cute baby is hardly the only Madonna-and-child image on newsstands this week. There are also stories about newly adoptive – and newly single – mom Sandra Bullock, as well as the usual “Jennifer Aniston is pregnant” news. Practically every week features at least one celebrity mom, or mom-to-be, smiling on the newsstands.

In a society that so persistently celebrates procreation, is it any wonder that admitting you regret having children is equivalent to admitting you support kitten-killing ? It doesn‘t seem quite fair, then, to compare the regrets of parents to the regrets of the children. Unhappy parents rarely are provoked to wonder if they shouldn’t have had kids, but unhappy childless folks are bothered with the message that children are the single most important thing in the world: obviously their misery must be a direct result of the gaping baby-size holes in their lives.

Of course, the image of parenthood that celebrity magazines like Us Weekly and People present is hugely unrealistic, especially when the parents are single mothers like Bullock. According to several studies concluding that parents are less happy than childless couples, single parents are the least happy of all. No shock there, considering how much work it is to raise a kid without a partner to lean on; yet to hear Sandra and Britney tell it, raising a kid on their “own” (read: with round-the-clock help) is a piece of cake.

It‘s hard to imagine that many people are dumb enough to want children just because Reese and Angelina make it look so glamorous: most adults understand that a baby is not a haircut. But it’s interesting to wonder if the images we see every week of stress-free, happiness-enhancing parenthood aren‘t in some small, subconscious way contributing to our own dissatisfactions with the actual experience, in the same way that a small part of us hoped getting “ the Rachel” might make us look just a little bit like Jennifer Aniston.

Many people talked of the 288,000 new jobs the Labor Department reporled for Jure, along with the drop in the unemployment take to 6 J percent. at good news. And they were right. For now it appears the economy is creating jobs at a decent pace. We still have a long way to go to get back to full employment, but at least we are now finally moving forward at a faster pace.

However there is another important part of the jobs picture that was targely ovedookcd. There was a big jump in the number of people who report voluntarily working part-time. This figure is now 830,000(4,4 percent)above its year ago level.

Before explaining the connection to the Obamacare, it is worth making an important distinction. Many people who work part-time jobs actually want full-time jobs. They take part-time work because this is all they can get. An increase in involuntary part-time work is evidence of weakness in the labor market and it means that many people will be having a very hard time making ends meet.

There was an increase in involuntary part-time in June, but the general direction has been down. Involuntary part-time employment is still far higher than before the recession, but it is down by 640,000(7.9 percent)from its year ago level.

We know the difference between voluntary and involuntary part-time employment because people tell us. The survey used by the Labor Department asks people if they worked less than 35 hours in the reference week. If the answer is yes.they are classified as working part-time. The survey then asks whether they worked less than 35 hours in that week because they wanted to work less than full time or because they had no choice. They are only elassified as voluntary part-time workers if they tell the survey taker they chose to work less than 35 hours a week.

The issue of voluntary part-time relates to Obamacare becanse one of the main purposes was to allow people to get insurance outside of employment. For many people, especially those with serious health conditions or family mrs with serious health conditions, before Obamacare the only way to get insurance was through a job that provided health insurance.

However, Obamacare has allowed more than 12 million people to either get insurance through Medicaid or the exchanges. These are people who may previously have felt the need to get a full-time job that provided insurance in order to cover themselves and their families. With Obamacare there is no longer a link between employment and insurance.

36. Which part of the jobs picture was neglected?

A. The prospect of a thriving job market.

B. The increase of voluntary part-time jobs.

C. The possibility of full employment.

D. The acceleration of job creation.

37. Many people work part-time because they

A. prefer part-time jobs to full-time jobs

B. feel that is enough to make ends meet

C. cannot get their hands on full-time jobs

D. haven t seen the weakness of the market

38. Involuntary part-time employment in the US

A. is harder to acquire than one year ago

B. shows a general tendency of decline

C. satisfies the real need of the jobless

D. is lower than before the recession

39. It can be learned that with Obamacare, .

A. it is no longer easy for part-timers to get insurance

B. employment is no longer a precondition to get insurance

C. it is still challenging to get insurance for family mrs

D. full-time employment is still essential for insurance

40. The text mainly discusses.

A. employment in the US

B. part-timer classification

C. insurance through Medicaid

D. Obamacares trouble

答案:

36.B the increase of voluntary part-time jobs

37.C cannot get their hands on full-time jobs

38.B shows a general tendency of decline

39.B employment is no longer a precondition to get insurance

40.A employment in the US

48. Directions:

Write an essay based on the following chart. In your writing, you should

1) interpret the chart, and

2) give your comments.

You should write about 150 words on the ANSWER SHEET. (15 points)

Here is a chart, simple but accurate.

先将“我国某市居民春节假期花销比例”译成英语,根据倒鱼钩翻译法,可译成the proportions of the Spring Festival‘s expense of the residents in a certain city in China. It goes without saying that the chart records the proportions of the Spring Festival’s expense of the residents in a certain city in China, which successfully arouses our curiosity.

As is clearly reflected by the graph, the expense has been spent on totally different things.

Especially, the money used to buy the New Year‘s gifts accounts for 40% of the entire expense, which already outweighs all the others.

Definitely, what the chart reflects is supposed to be given further analysis.

Theoretically, several reasons may trigger the trend that people tend to spend more money to buy gifts during the Spring Festival, but as for my part, the following two are of great value.

On the top of list is that the current state of the affair may have been encouraged, though not justified, by the widely spreading advertisements of gifts. In addition, there is the other point that no one can ignore. It is universally acknowledged that the Spring Festival is the most important festival in our nation during which most people will buy gifts for their families and friends.

Taking into account what has been discussed above, we may safely come to the conclusion that the present situation concisely conveyed by the pie chart will sustain in the forthcoming years.

Here is a pie chart, simple but accurate. It goes without saying that the chart records the proportions of the Spring Festival‘s expense of the residents in a certain city in China, which successfully arouses our curiosity. As is clearly reflected by the graph, the expense has been spent on totally different things. Especially, the money used to buy the New Year’s gifts accounts for 40% of the entire expense, which already outweighs all the others.

例如,在Text 2第二段的开头有这样一句话:“California has asked the justices to refrain from a sweeping ruling, particularly one that upsets the old assumption that authorities may search through the possessions of suspects at the time of their arrest.”

1 Which of the following is shown to be odd, according to Paragraph 4? (Text 1 Question 23)

A. Aristocrats’ excessive reliance on inherited wealth.

B. The role of the nobility in modern democracies.

C. The simple lifestyle of the aristocratic families.

D. The nobility’s adherence to their privileges.

解析:根据题干中的关键词odd (奇怪的),考生可将答案信息定位至原文第四段第三句的后半部分:“... it is bizarre that wealthy aristocratic families should still be the symbolic heart of modern democratic states.”

2 The author believes that exploring one’s phone content is comparable to (Text 2 Question 28)

A. getting into one’s residence.

B. handling one’s historical records.

C. scanning one’s correspondences.

D. going through one’s wallet.

解析:这道题问的是搜查个人手机内容相当于什么,题干中的关键信息exploring one’s phone content在原文第四段出现了两次,分别是第一句的“They should start by discarding California’s lame argument that exploring the contents of a smart phone ... is similar to, say, rifling through a suspect’s purse”和第三句的“But exploring one’s smart phone is more like entering his or her home”。

3 David Vaux holds that what Science is doing now (Text 3 Question 34)

A. adds to researchers’ workload.

B. diminishes the role of reviewers.

C. has room for further improvement.

D. is to fail in the foreseeable future.

考生可以根据人名将相关信息定位至原文第六段:“Vaux says that Science’s idea to pass some papers to statisticians “has some merit, but a weakness is that it relies on the Board of Reviewing Editors to identify ‘the papers that need scrutiny’ in the first place.””

4 The phrase “flagged up” (Para. 2) is the closest in meaning to (Text 3 Question 32)

A. found.

B. revised.

C. marked.

D. stored.

解析:短语flagged up出现在原文第二段:“Working with the American Statistical Association, the journal has appointed seven experts to a Statistics Board of Reviewing Editors (SBoRE). Manuscript will be flagged up for additional scrutiny by the journal’s internal editors, or by its existing Board of Reviewing Editors or by outside peer reviewers.”

5 Which of the following is the best title of the text? (Text 3 Question 35)

A. Science Joins Push to Screen Statistics in Papers

B. Professional Statisticians Deserve More Respect

C. Data Analysis Finds Its Way onto Editors’ Desks

D. Statisticians Are Coming Back with Science

由于文章为“总—分”结构,全文主旨已在总起段明确点出,因此,考生可以根据第一段的主题句“The journal Science is adding an extra round of statistical checks to its peer-review process”判断选项A为正确答案。

6 The author’s attitude toward California’s argument is one of (Text 2 Question 27)

A. tolerance.

B. indifference.

C. disapproval.

D. cautiousness.

解析:这道题所对应的原文信息是“The court would be recklessly modest if it followed California’s advice”和“They should start by discarding California’s lame argument that …”。
