Young Hamilton is only allowed to speak Irish or German in a land where English is the majority language.Under the tyranny of his father, learning to speak Irish is a bittersweet experience for Hamilton.Although everyone was proud of him speaking Irish and he seems to like being Irish, he knows that all boys in the school are actually laughing at him (p236) .He knows people laugh at them because Irish speakers in Ireland are treated like people from a foreign country, from another planet (p281) .

Somewhat like the dictator Hitler, Hamilton’s father forbids anything British in his house including the English language, even the photograph of Hamilton’s grandfather is hidden at the back of his father’s wardrobe on account of having been a sailor in the British navy.He forces his ideas on his wife and family. He beats his children for speaking English, even using‘bad words like fruit gum’ (p158) .He enforces a harsh set of values on his children.

Ironically enough, it seems that the stricter his father treats his children in terms of Irish language speaking, the less successful it is.In the very end of the memoir, the death of his father who is stung by his own bees symbolizes the collapse of hegemony of Irish language at home.Just as Hermione Lee remarks, it’s“a defeat in the language wars"which is also a victory as Hamilton writes this wonderful memoir in English.

Hamilton is afraid to speak German when they are out on the streets even when other people keep asking him to say things in German. He pretends he is Irish and speaks only English, but the boys still call them Nazis when they see him wearing lederhosen. He denies being a German for he assumes that Germans are Nazis. He doesn’t understand his mother’s homesickness and what German means to her after suffering a lot in the war and now living in a totally strange place where she cannot communicate with local people in Irish or English.

For Hamilton, the Irish language is something that needs him to‘make a sacrifice’ (p159) , German is like a‘birthmark’ (p227) that he should know to relieve his mother’s homesickness, and English is the language he has to speak in order to be assimilated into the public Irish society and something he cannot avoid in spite of his father’s efforts to prevent him from speaking. It can be observed that Hamilton is always careful in choosing these languages to speak to different people and in different situations.

Actually Hamilton takes an equivocal or at least not positive attitude towards being trilingual. This is well demonstrated in his preference for diving and puppet play in which no language is involved (p194) .He finally dares to publicly announce his attitude towards Irish by saying‘I would not speak any dying language anymore’when he knows that his father is‘losing the language war’ (p278, 279) .On the one hand, Hamilton knows his father‘ends up losing everything although he tries to win everything’ (p122) , on the other, he has to admit that‘as long as there are people like my father who made their own children speak it (Irish) , the language would never die out’ (p182) .

Hamilton’s father is a passionate West Cork man for whom the Irish language would help reconstruction and independence of Ireland. He marries a German woman because he insists that marrying somebody from the other country and having children is a better way to fight for the‘resurrection’ (p116) of his own country. He uses his own children as‘weapons’ (p117) .He even‘wants Jewish people in Ireland to speak Irish and do Irish dancing’ (p254) .His father is a thorough dreamer either in advocating as many people as possible to speak Irish or doing business in the hope of making Irish own creations and inventions. In fact what his father’s viewing and doing is a kind of lingual chauvinism and is much like Hitler. However, Hamilton’s mother clearly knows this.“It’s good to love your country and to be patriotic, but that doesn’t mean you have to kill people who belong to other countries’ (122) .However, her husband has power in his words. She likes the English song on the radio but she’s not allowed to sing it and she can only listen to it when her husband is at work.In fact, she acts as a stabilizer in her family, always relaxing the tension caused by the father’s passion for hegemony of Irish language. With experiences she underwent before coming to Dublin, she becomes more patient with the people and the world.

Speaking languages doesn’t necessarily mean that you belong to some group or a certain country.Sense of belongingness cannot be realized just through acquiring a language. At the very beginning, Hamilton believes that being a‘speckled’people means that they are‘aliens’and they will never be Irish enough even though they speak the Irish language (p7) .As Rodriguez mentions in his Hunger of Memory some bilingual educators say that becoming multilingual“children lose a degree of‘individuality’” (p26) .Hamilton is quite dubious about learning three languages. However, after his father dies, Hamilton comes to know that they actually have to be‘speckled’or‘brack’people because they“don’t just have one language and one history” (p283) .He has to bear the history of his father, mother as well as the whole Irish society. At last, by claiming that“I’m not afraid of being homesick and having no language to live in” (p295) , Hamilton feels relieved of heavy loads which once accompanied his childhood. For Hamilton, he achieves‘public individuality’called by Rodriguez‘by becoming assimilated into public society in spite of a diminished sense of private individuality’ (p26) .

It is quite consistent with the argument of educational psychologist described in Steiner’s Errata:An Examined Life.It says that‘multilingualism from an early age will generate confusion in the nascent psyche.Segmented and confused between different tongues, the mind, the ligaments of coherent identity in the child will be partially or generally unraveled.’ (p80, 81) .And obviously Hamilton goes through these and succeeds eventually. In Hamilton’s whole life the three languages together confuse him in terms of his own nationality and identity.

In this sense, it can be observed that beneath the explicit theme of trilingual acquisition in the Speckled People lies an eternal subject of the humankind—pursuit of identity or belongingness.

I always think what qualities a hero or heroine should have? Good looks, a kind heart, a special talent? I my opinion, hero should have a special talent.

Someone thinks that Yang Liwei is a national hero, because he is the first Chinese astronaut. Someone thinks that Sun Yat-sen is a history hero, because he led 1911 revolution and founded the first Republic of China. Yes, they are right. But I thinks Kobe Bryant is a hero. He is a basketball player. And he is on Los Angeles Lakers Team. Maybe you say why you don’t think Yao Ming is a hero, and he is also a Chinese basketball player who has joined NBA. But I will tell you that Kobe Byrant plays basketball better than Yao Ming. And Kobe is also nice and friendly to his fans. He is the most successful American basketball player in NBA history. We always called him “basketball king” and “flyer”. Last year, he got 81 points in the game. It is unbelievable . He makes us crazy for him. I think he will win more honor in the future.Ialways believethat he is able to help his team to win the NBA champion. I love basketball, I love Kobe Byrant. He is the hero in my heart. And do you admire him?

What are you going to do when you grow upWhen I was a child, people often asked me this question about the ideal. Undoubtedly, every individual, especially a young person, should have an ideal. Hardly can we find any great people we know ideal when they were young.

An ideal is a vital importance to ones growth and success. On the one hand, an ideal is the target of ones life. Once you decide what your ideal is, you know where to go, and which way to take. Otherwise, you might become puzzled in many things in your life. On the other hand, an ideal is like the engine of vehicles. Only when we have our own ideals, can we find the origin of energy and enthusiasm in life, and become active and perseverant. Whatever your ideal is, careful plan and preparation is vital to its realization. Of course, the path from where you are to where you want to get is not always smooth and straight. Therefore, an optimistic, positive mind is indispensable in the process of your persevering your ideal.

In a word, only if you have an ideal, you will have the chance of realizing it.

There is a story of architecture through humanity, and about Beauty in simplicity and nature. We are in the Arctic Circle, traveling towards the North Pole, across the frozen world. We are coming to celebrate an ancient, elemental and beautiful structure. But because of the temperature in the Arctic are rising faster than anywhere else, It’s a structure could soon be lost forever.Today we will build an igloo together, a structure that reveals the origin of architecture, when man first created shelter from hostile weather and prowling beasts.First we need a good snow.Igloo, a creation of the Inuit culture, was used as winter home and shelters on hunting expeditions. The people there still hunt, but few build igloos. Then we draw a big circle on the ground. And blocks. The blocks are cut from snow, compacted by the wind to the right consistency. We need about fifty blocks in all.The master block, the foundation has to be placed facing towards the sunshine, because the sun gives us everything. The blocks are laid in a clockwise direction, following the motion of the sun as it moves though the sky from draw to dusk. The way it works is very simple. This particular sort of dome is like the top of an eggshell. It is a ovoid dome, not a semi-circle, so that the force of the weight of the blocks are taken more or less straight down to the ground. The trouble with these sorts of dome, they thrust outwards and want to sort of fall down, but the igloo is incredibly strong. And it supports its own weight, and a lot of other things besides when it’s completed. The miracle of the igloo is that the weakest building material possible, frozen water, achieve strength through brilliant engineering. After a couple of layers of blocks, the walls start sloping inward. The blocks start to spar up and each block is cunningly shaped. It’s all together by a good bit which sort of melts a bit of snow, and then that freezes. And it just stays firm.So it’s all being glued together with ice.Constructing a dome without props or scaffolding is a perilous undertaking. The final stages are hazardous.Problematic joins are fixed with intricate ice carpentry. And the familiar shape keeps on growing.Back inside, all that remains are the finishing touches. We spin two blocks of particular shape to be the keystone and capped stone. Finally it’s completed. The dome is regarded as one of the high points of our architectural culture, particularly celebrated as a hallmark of roman engineering genius.Yet, in this culture, isolated, remote from our own, the dome also developed to meet particular environmental problems and demands. It’s incredible that two cultures so different should come up with the same architectural form. The igloo is a wondrous machine. The snow blocks are cold but wonderful insulators. When heat melts the surface of snow, and the liquid would run into the cracks, freeze and seal them,.So the whole thing really becomes a building of ice rather than snow, eventually much stronger. The igloo contains all the basic ideas of architecture. It’s a practical shelter and a miniature masterpiece of engineering. But above all, the igloo is beautiful, beautiful because of the logic, the clarity of thinking behind its design and construction, beautiful because it seems so simple, yet is also so complex in its function. And of course, beautiful because of its form, the celestial dome, the symbol of the sun in this icy land.

Good morning, everyone. It is my honors to be here to share my opinions about the problems on the university students’ psychological health with you.Now more and more people are becoming to recognize that psychological health is a thorny trouble for university students. Many results show that most students are open-minded, lively and they are rich in imagination with variety of knowledge. However, we also must mention some weak points in our personality. Some of us have a strong sense of responsibility, and we have little experience in the society. What is more, we are too weak in our self-control.Firstly, we focus on the sense of inferiority. After we enter university, we may find that there are variety of students around us, among them some do well in study, some are pretty and good at singing and dancing, some are outstanding in activities. Then some students lend to have a sense of inferiority. In my opinion, we should not compare their advantages with our disadvantages, and we should try our best to find our merit by communicating with our classmates actively and learning from them. Thus we will be able to become a master hand in some fields.Secondly, the topic is about depression and anxiety. As we all know, there are different kinds of attracts in our college life, such as surfing the Internet, going shopping, gathering with our friends to have a enjoyment and so on.Most of us do not have a good habit of studying, which will lead to some records that make us depressed. At that time, anxiety and

depression will appear in our heart. But at this moment we should calm down and search some effective suggestions from our teachers.Everything is easy if one puts his heart into it.believe that diligence can help us solve all the difficulties in our study. Finally, let us discuss the problem of future and pressure. Some students think that they are common students in an ordinary university, and they fear this will prevent them from seeking for a good job. Therefore, some of us want to further studies to get a master’s degree. But are you sure that a master’s degree will bring you a better job? Many recent surveys tell us that it may be untrue. As far as I am concerned, we can try working for a while, and several years’ work experience may make us get a good position and maybe a good job.In modern society, experience and skills may be more highly valued than educational backgrounds. From what we have discussed above, we can get these conclusions, which are that if we work hard and try to improve ourselves, we will get our own achievement;if we take part in activities actively and communicate with our classmates and teachers, we will live a colorful life.
