Audition: An Unforgettable Moment
Simon Cowell (Judge): Hi, what’s your name,
darling?
Boyle: My name is Susan Boyle.
Cowell: Okay, Susan, where are you from?
Boyle: I am from Whiteman, near Bathgate West Lothian.
Cowell: That’s a big town.
Boyle: It’s a sort of collection of…it’s a collection of
villages. Had to think there.
Cowell: And how old are you, Susan?
Boyle: I am 47. And that’s just one side of me.
Cowell: Okay. What’s the dream?
Boyle: I…I’m trying to be a professional singer.
Cowell: And why hasn’t it worked out so far,
Susan?
Boyle: Oh, I’ve never been given the chance
before, but here’s hoping it’ll change.
Cowell: Okay, and who would you like to be as
successful as?
Boyle: Elaine Page注.
Cowell: (surprised) Elaine Page.
Piers Morgan (Judge): What are you gong to sing tonight?
Boyle: I’m going to sing “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables.
(Boyle sings “I Dreamed a Dream.”)
Ant (Host): Didn’t expect that, did you? Did You? No!
(Susan wants to leave the stage when she finishes her song; everyone shouts.)
Cowell: Hello!
Morgan: Hey, come back here!
Ant: There, there, there! Stay there! Stay there!
Cowell: Alright, thank you very much, Susan.
Piers.
Morgan: Without a doubt that was THE biggest surprise I have had in three years on this show. When you stood there with that 1)cheeky 2)grin and said “I, I want to be like Elaine Page,” everyone was laughing at you. No one is laughing now. That was 3)stunning! An incredible performance! Amazing! I’m 4)reeling from shock! 5)Dunno about you two, but I can’t believe it…
Amanda Holden (Judge): I am so 6)thrilled because I know that everybody was against you. I honestly think that we were all being very 7)cynical, and I think that’s
the biggest wake-up call ever. And I just want to say that was a complete 8)privilege listening to that.
Cowell: Susan, I knew the minute you walked out…
Boyle: Oh, Simon!!
Cowell: …on that stage that we were going to hear something extraordinary, and I was right.
Dec (Host): (laughs) What a lot of 9)tosh!
Cowell: Susan, you are a little tiger, aren’t you?
Boyle: I don’t know about that.
Cowell: You are.
Boyle: Don’t know about that.
Cowell: Okay, 10)moment of truth. Piers, yes or no?
Morgan: The biggest “Yes” I have ever given
anybody!
Cowell: Amanda?
Holden: Yes, definitely! It’s brilliant.
Boyle: (exited) Amanda! You too!
Cowell: Susan Boyle, you can go back to the village with your head held high. It’s three yeses!
Final: Beyond the Show
Montagne: It is not turning out to be a fairy tale ending yet for Susan Boyle. She, of course, is the Scottish singer,
who wowed the world on YouTube with her surprisingly beautiful 11)rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream.” And her last 12)hurdle on the show, Britain’s Got Talent, was a face-off against a lively street dance 13)troupe called
Diversity.
Dec: The Winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2009 is Diversity!
Montagne: On stage, Susan Boyle was 14)gracious about the upset, but this morning comes news that she’s been admitted to a London clinic for 15)exhaustion.
Rob Gifford: Morning, Renee.
Montagne: Well, it’s a sort of sad moment at least in this story. What do we know about Susan Boyle’s condition?
Gifford: Well, we don’t know very much at all, except that she has been admitted to a clinic here in London. The television company that makes Britain’s Got Talent
issued a statement saying that she was exhausted after the show. And it really has been quite a roller coaster for her emotionally and in every way over the last couple of months, since she first came to the…the attention of the general public in that first program. She’s had the media camped outside her home in a tiny village in Scotland. She’s been all over the media, all over the Internet. And, and then on top of that, she didn’t win as expected, so it has been very difficult for her, I think. And I think there’s a lot of sympathy for her and that she just needs a little bit of time and a little bit of space to recover emotionally from this crazy last couple of
months.
Montagne: And what are people saying about why
Susan Boyle lost? At…at least the…those of us in the
outside world were thinking, “Well, you know, she has to win, of course, she’s such a 16)sensation.”
Gifford: That’s right. And I think a lot of people thought she was a complete 17)shoo-in for this. Some people have suggested that the public thought she was such a shoo-in that they didn’t bother to vote. Other people have said…
there was one article in the newspaper saying that people…“it had just been long enough for people to get either bored or 18)irritated with her” and the whole story in the media circus around her; again, lots of stories in the
19)tabloid press. There was a story that she had been 20)provoked by two tabloid journalists and she’d launched these 21)expletives at them and got very angry indeed. Some people say that…that she lost that sort of image of the 22)ingénue who…who’d stepped out of her village in Scotland, and people thought, “Oh, maybe she’s a bit, sort of, more unstable than we thought.”
Montagne: …What is likely to happen to her now? I mean, one of the things she’d said during this whole program was she wanted to…to go on, have…make an album.
Gifford: Well, I think there is a feeling that, even though she lost, she will go on and make an album. And as I
understand it, she has all sorts of offers and, and all sorts of figures being 23)bandied around in the press that she’s
going to make five to eight million pounds – you know, more than ten million dollars – from record contracts over the next couple of years. But I think the crucial thing at the moment is that she just takes a bit of time to stand back, step back and recover from it. But certainly the judges in the show were in no doubt that she was going to go on to be a star even though she didn’t win.

Diversity: The Sky’s the Limit !
We caught up with Diversity member, Jordan Banjo, to discuss winning the show.
Diversity wowed the public with their creative dance routines and were praised for the funny
narratives[叙述] in their performances.
When they realized they were up against Susan Boyle, did the guys think that the runners-up spot was the best they could hope for?
“Susan has an amazing talent, and I think she did fantastically well considering the amount of pressure she was under. Backstage before we went on for the results, we were all saying to each other that ‘second is the new first’ because we thought Susan would win. So when they announced us as the winners, I was absolutely speechless. It’s hard to describe exactly how it feels. All I can say is: it’s brilliant and we’re
going to enjoy every minute of whatever comes our way. To be doing all this with the guys who are practically my family is amazing; I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Now they have captured the hearts of the nation, what is next?
“I honestly don’t know, but the sky is the limit as far as I’m concerned!”
