Unfortunately, I did have the chance to ask his name, but thought our conversation on board, I knew that he is from the USA and graduated from Harvard University.

Well, he is a very sophisticated and experienced business who is running a IT business in China, However, all our topics are round education, which I found really stimulating.

We exchanged our opinions on what appropriate schooling should be . He said that there is no consensus on what constitutes a sound teaching methodology. However, as far as he was concerned, that fine schooling, from primary-level to tertiary-level, has some common characteristics. For example, he asserted that advantageous education should encourage student to think independently and critically, and empowers them to evaluate their teacher performance openly, as opposed to force-feeds students and render them only capable of spitting back predigested ideas.

The reason why i thought it is an interesting conversation is that I learnt a lot through talking with him. From another angle to analysis what education should afford to our offspring.

So this is a friend of mine I was at school with. After finishing our education with both went in different directions, and I didn’t see her again for thirty years when we met up again completely by chance in a different city where we were both now living. It’s actually quite hard to describe ‘what she does’ because that is part of her style, she does lots of different things, and it seems wrong somehow to pigeon hole her with just one activity She makes a living through running her own business making specially decorated biscuits which she supplies by mail order. But she is the sort of person who always has a multitude of things on the go at any one time. She is involved in many sports clubs, on the organising committee for the local scouts (a national youth organisation) - including arranging an annual Guy Fawkes’ Night bonfire and firework display for many years which is their main fundraising event; and on top of that she is always initiating new – to me ambitious – projects like holding a huge birthday party or suggesting an outing further afield.

What makes this friend a good leader is hard to pinpoint. I don’t think it is any one thing, it is rather a combination of positive characteristics. She is very energetic, so prepared to work hard to get things done. She is optimistic, inclined to see opportunities and possibilities where other people might be put off by potential problems. This energy and optimism engages other people. You can be confident if you invest time and energy in supporting her ideas they will happen, it won’t be a waste of time. She is also incredibly well organised, with an attention to detail. This is important for morale! It means that if you turn up in the pouring rain to, I don’t know, build a bonfire or erect a tent, she will have thought of things that make it fun. You will find a gas bottle fuelled urn of bubbling hot water to make tea to keep you going, or maybe at a certain time a mass order of scalding hot chips, wrapped in paper from the local chip shop will appear as if by magic to keep everyone going for a couple more hours. She has an ability to network, which means if one of her projects require some particular expertise she’ll almost inevitably know someone who knows someone that will get it done for free. It is inspiring to be involved in her projects, you get a great sense of satisfaction working together as part of a team, confident that the person driving it all forwards knows what needs to be done, and that it will be enjoyable along the way. When whatever project it is has finished, she always remembers to thank you and let you know for example how much money was raised, or how many people attended. It is quite a skill.

Leadership is not easy. A good leader in my view inspires and motivates others to do their best, rather than tells people what to do. By believing in you, they can help you believe in yourself, and then everyone together achieves far more than they ever could on their own, and probably a great deal more than they thought possible at the outset… If only my managers and bosses in the workplace had such good leadership skills I think I’d get a lot more done!

Sample answer

Times need heroes, and heroes stand out. Franklin Roosevelt is just a hero of the times. Well known for his unprecedented (前所未有的)13 years as the President of U. S. , he is regarded as a savior(救主) of America. However, it is not his brilliant achievements that attract me. What I really admire are some qualities shining in his whole life such as fortitude, courage and also his amiability.

His early time, I mean before his forties, was smooth. He was born rich and had a happy marriage. After graduating from Harvard, he served in the Navy. At that time, he had already shown his remarkable(非凡的) leadership and since his uncle was a President, he would surely enter the political arena. But everything changed when he was 39. Healthy and strong as he was, he was attacked by polio(小儿麻痹症)after swimming, which caused the life long deformity (畸形)in his legs. It was extremely hard for this ambitious(雄心勃勃的) man to face the misfortune. He was, of course, in a bad mood and wanted to give up all his dreams at first. Then, after careful thinking, he finally decided to bestir himself. He was not a man easy to surrender(屈服). Again he took part in political activities and, at the same time, practiced standing up and then walking with a stick. Eventually this brave man won the battle against fate. He became the only disabled President in American history and unprecedentedly served four terms. All should be attributed to his fortitude.

His famous saying “The only thing we fear is fear itself.”made me know him, and this saying has spread all over the world and encouraged lots of people. Roosevelt first said it, and as a great leader, he made all his people believe it. He practiced what he preached for he was surely a courageous person challenging the tradition. He formulated(制定) new policies to help his nation out of the Depression. He declared war against Fascists though most of the Congressmen opposed him at that time. All proved that he was right for his courage was not rash but based on careful thinking. “A leader is one who dares to dream, and then, dares to achieve.”

He was great, but not great in appearance. He looked like a kind grandpa at the first sight. He initiated the fireside chat to express his ideas and explain his policies in a relaxed atmosphere(氛围) on radio. He always smiled sincerely(真诚地) when speaking and listening. These didn’t lower his prestige(声望) but made him amiable(和蔼可亲的) and welcome.

He is surely not a perfect man no one can be perfect. Every age has its hero in the forefront, just like Franklin Roosevelt, a man I admire.

Describe a leader or politician who you admire.

You should say:

Who is s/ he?

What is so appealing about him?

What type of leader is he/ she

and explain why do you admire him /her.

I’d like to talk about Steve Jobs. I think he is a very important leader for this time in history. Like many famous leaders in the past he changed the way we see things and do things through his innovation and creativity.

Some people may think he just invented the Apple Mac computer and a phone, but the inventon or device which really changed everything was the iPhone. It made people rethink what a phone could be and should be and as we can now see it has been the catalyst behind much of the smartphone technology and developments since it was first launched. Current smartphone technology now makes online

shopping even easier and accessing any kind of information online which has fundamentally transformed our daily bahavior.

Maybe if he hadn’t launched the iPhone, someone lese would have done something similar evetually, but he had the vision and the creativiuty to do it first and that always makes a difference. I don’t think he planned to become a world influencer or business leader, he simply had a company which innovated something that impacted on the daily lives of many people in a big way.

The qualitites that he had; being an innovator, being able to see things in a different way and conceptualize other ways of doings things, some people would call it being visionary are what impress me most abut him. He changed the way we interact with each other through mobile devices and that has had a tremendous impact on modern life and the other technology developments that have followed on the back of it. The world will never be the same as it was before the iPhone came along.

Thank you very much to let me talk about this cue card topic. The story that I am going to talk about is a fascinating story on how an eight year’s old kid saved more than 500 people from possible fatal casualty. I read this story a year ago in a daily newspaper.

This story was published in a popular newspaper that I used to read every day at that time and it was featured as a story of bravery and exemplary one.

An eight years old boy was playing with some other kids in the evening near a rail junction and suddenly noticed that a part of the rail track was severely damaged. While other kids ignored that and returned to their houses, this particular boy was different and he went home and persuaded his father that something bad is going to happen. He came back to the train junction with his father and took a great deal of hassle to convince the rail officers to actually go to visit the damage. They officers were reluctant to do so and thought it was a child’s imagination or lack of comprehension. But the boy was adamant and with his father, they were able to finally convince them that something terrible might happen if they do not take prompt actions. When all of them saw the severe damage on the rail track, it was almost the time for a passenger rail to pass this junction using this particular rail track. It was evening and very few people were in the station. The railway authority understood that repairing the harmed railroad was impossible. They immediately informed the nearby station and warned them so that the train does not leave that junction.

Next day many rail supervisors and employees visited the place and they were amazed by the bravery the boy showed to save people from an approaching peril.

I followed the news story and next day it made the headline of every local newspaper. As far I remember the boy was given many gifts by the rail authorities as well as the local administration.

The story was an exemplary one to remind us how a small sacrifice and bravery can save others. The eight years old boy showed his utmost intelligence, heroism and prompt actions to save people from unforeseeable dangers. The event was so touchy that it went viral in a day and that hit the headline of many newspapers. I did not watch TV that time, but I am sure that was also in TV news.

Well, I’m from HanDan, an inland city that is in the middle of China. It’s well known for its historical architecture. Also, many travellers like the traditional spicy food, which is a “must-eat” for visitors once they come to town.

2. What tourist attractions are there in your hometown?

Actually, there’re several must-see spots here, like the national museums, international shopping malls and other historical heritages. Well, I’d like to mention a place called Sai Kung, which is a famous fishing village. What’s more, there’re many roadside vendors selling different kinds of trinkets along the sea front.

3. What do you think needs to change in your hometown?

Um…traffic! Driving here can be a nightmare. I get stuck in the middle of the bumper-to-bumper traffic every day when I’m on my way to work. It drives me crazy and sometimes I’ve even thought of jumping out of the car and run! Well, fortunately, the newly built subway will be in service this year and I hope it really can help release the pressure on the road.

5. For you, what benefits are there to living in a big city?

Well, obviously, living in a large city brings me lots of convenience, well I mean, there’s a well-developed public transport network, like the subway, bus or even taxi. What’s more, I’m a shopaholic, I like shopping in fancy boutiques at shopping arcades and I’m quite sure that small grocery stores in a village can’t satisfy me.

This form is a compulsory content for all the pupils around China in their primary education. From Laokaoya. From day one, I spent a great deal of time familiarizing, learning and practicing it so that I will not forget it for my whole life. This article is from laokaoya website, do not copy or repost it.It has become my instinct and I can still speak out these numbers without thinking.

It was a middle-aged female teacher who taught me this form. At that time, I was quite numb and a slow learner. Even if it was a very simple question, I could get the result wrong. However, the teacher would not criticise me, but patiently explain again and again and guide me through the computing process. Finally, I caught up with my classmates and mastered this form.

It is very useful in life. When we are shopping, we often need to do some simple calculation so that the goods will not exceed our budget. from Laokaoya. Without a calculator at hand, I often resort to this multiplication form to get my numbers and it never goes wrong.

Mental Math Skills

The above calculations usually arise at times when, or places where, I do not wish to take the time to pull out a calculating device, or let the world know I cannot figure things out without help.

Descriptive and Predictive Statistics

Many news reports and advertisements use statistics, but seldom provide enough information for the viewer or reader to make their own evaluation of the data. A strong background in descriptive statistics helps you to understand how easily incomplete statistical information, or poorly designed polls, can mislead at election time, in advertisements, or in making organizational decisions. Recent research results on brain development also seem to lean towards describing our brain as a marvelous statistical engine that allows us to make reasonable inferences in situations that have a history of varied results.

Work Habits

Using scrap paper to do work on topics not yet mastered, and copying work over before handing it in. It is amazing how much can be learned from copying work over:

– checking for mistakes

– correcting post-mistake work efficiently

– finding a new way to approach a problem

– finding a better or more effective way to present your answer

Keeping course materials organized in a way that makes them easy to review regularly, and find material when needed. Organization skills and habits of mind can help improve both your efficiency and your results on most any task or assignment.

Communicating My Thought Process

Most math teachers will require their students to “show their work” in order to receive full credit. This is no different than an English teacher requiring a conclusion to be justified by preceding persuasive paragraphs. Writing an “essay” that consisted only of a concluding sentence, even if it is a very good conclusion, would not result in a passing grade. Neither will most work in math and science if all you do is show the result. We always, always need to either convince the reader that our result makes sense, and/or help the reader verify that we have not made any mistakes. In English, we use words to do so; in Math we use both words and the more concise notations developed in each Math course.

You should say:

when it was

what it was

why you chose it

how you achieved.

I guess success can vary depending on your viewpoint. Some people judge success by how much money they have, the clothes they wear or the car they drive. In that respect I maybe haven’t had a lot of success so far in my life, but I have still achieved things that I am proud of.

One such thing I can remember happened when I was an undergraduate at university, I think during my second year. We were encouraged to get involved in after-school activities and events, so I volunteered to help organise a dubbing contest that was taking place. You have probably come across dubbing if you’ve watched a foreign film and the native language has been replaced with another one over the top. The students that took part had divided themselves into groups of three or four people. They would take it in turns to go up on stage and play an English movie without the sound turned on, while they spoke the words over the top of the video.

I mainly chose to volunteer so that I could earn extra credits, or points, to go towards my degree. But it was also a good opportunity to meet some new people and it gave me something to do in my spare time.

Describe a useful thing you borrowed.

You should say:

what you borrowed

who lent it to you and when

what kind of features this thing has

and explain why you think it is useful.

It’s funny you should ask this question as I actually borrowed something very useful just last week, so it’s very fresh in my memory.

I’ve been doing some D.I.Y. in my apartment lately, I’m trying to do it up so that it looks a bit nicer. I wanted to put some new shelves up, but I didn’t have the right equipment, so I asked my friend Jack if I could borrow his electric drill. I had lent him something a few weeks earlier, so he didn’t mind returning the favour.

Even though on the surface it is just a drill it is extremely versatile and has more features than you might expect. It comes with a wide range of attachments for drilling different sized holes or into different types of material. There are also attachments that turn it into a screwdriver or a sander, to sand down wood and give it a smooth edge.

I’m so grateful he lent it to me, it would have been hard work to drill by hand and it saved me loads of time and energy. I put the shelves up in no time and with minimal fuss.

I’ve always wanted to buy an electric drill, but have never gotten round to it. When you don’t need something it’s easy to put off buying it, but then you don’t have it when you do need it!

Just after finishing my college, I along with two other friends planned to start a small business.

Why do some people like to borrow things instead of buying them?

What would you do if people don t return the money they borrowed from you?

Why are people embarrassed when they borrow money from others?

How often you borrow something from others?

Borrowing is not in my nature but when I am in extreme need of something and I cannot manage alone getting that, I borrow. But it is a rare event for me and my surrounding people that I am borrowing something from them. However, I do not bother in lending.

In which situation people usually borrow things?

When people have nothing to do with any specific issue, they are to borrow from others. For instance, you are standing in a bus queue to get the ticket for returning your home and suddenly realised that someone took your wallet (I mean you are experiencing a pickpocket) but you have to go home, what will you do? This is an emergency for you. The first thing you will do is that you will look for any familiar people who can help you in that situation by paying your ticket fare. In such a situation, you will not mind in borrowing and also will return the favour in the next day or when it is possible.

Is it good to borrow apart from the emergency situations?

If you make it a habit of borrowing things in every situation it will be considered as a bad habit. Moreover, it will reduce your credibility and a help building a negative image of you among your surrounding people. You can borrow anything you need if it is an emergency for you. Besides, the people will extend their helping hand towards you without any condition or second thought when they will realise that truly you are in danger. But if you abuse their generosity, at the end of the day you will get no help from any of them. In this case, you can recall the moral story of the cowboy and tiger.

Is it okay to borrow money from neighbours?

You can take anything if you truly need them. It may be money, it may be any favour or even it may be any sort of physical and mental support. But it should be necessary and you need to be unable right that moment to gather the things you are borrowing. You can borrow money from your neighbours too but you need to be honest in this case. You are to return the money within the promised returning time. If you miss the deadline, the neighbour may not say you something due to courtesy but you may not get any further help from him/ her in future.

What problems can occur while collecting return money from people?

Usually, people love to forget the favours. Many people do not care about the favours once they receive those in their emergencies. As a result, they ignore to acknowledge the favours and do not refund them and even if they return, the break several deadlines. It mostly happens for money. If you loan someone an amount of money, you will never get that back in time. It happens everywhere. The beneficiaries start showing different excuses for the return. You are to run after them to collect the money and they, in fact, do not care about the importance of your favour. These are the common problems for lending money and getting that back.

Why sometimes it is difficult to ask somebody to return the money they borrowed?

Sometimes people cannot ask the money that was borrowed to someone mostly for the interpersonal relationship. Sometimes the relationships are so warm that the borrower does not return the money in time and the person who offered cannot also ask for that. It becomes difficult for him/ her to ask the money. It may also happen that the borrower is still in distress and thus the loan provider cannot ask to return the money. Besides, it may also happen that the loan provider has become irritated by running after the borrower, and in that case, it becomes difficult as well to ask for the money return.

When you go into the speaking test, the examiner grades you in four areas:

FC--Fluency & coherence

GA--Grammar Range & Accuracy

LR--Lexical Resource

PR--Pronunciation

Now to be honest every examiner knows what the strong and weak areas are for Chinese students. They all know that LR, which we can also call vocabulary is generally their strong point and FC and PR are generally the weaker. That does not mean that all students will have the same problems. The average IELTS score for Chinese students is 5.5.

The profile usually breaks down like this. Examiners called this a “jagged profile” because on a graph it looks like a jagged line。

FC 5 GA 6 PR 5 LR 6

If we take an average of these four scores we can see that is 5.5 score. This means that any strategy you use for passing the IELTS test should concentrate on FC and PR more than GA and LR. I am not saying that you should forget about GA and LR completely, just focus on the typical weak points。

In the next few parts I will take a look at each area and discuss how you can increase your scores by looking at what examiners want. On the next page you can see a checklist of basic questions that you can ask yourself during the exam. If you can manage to pay attention to all of these points, then you are going to succeed on the exam。

A point that I want to remind you of, is that it is always your weak points that will pull you down, so remember to maintain your strong points, but really focus on your weak points so that everything evens out。
