Likemost Chinese primary students, my life is quite simple. Get up in the morning,have breakfast and then go to school. My day always begins like that. But everysingle day is so different from each other. For example, I meet differentpeople on my way to school. I have different new classes every day, so I alwayslearn new knowledge. And the happiness is different. Yesterday I might be happybecause I got high scores in the exam, but today I am happy because I play withmy classmates. Knowledge and happiness make my every single day and life rich.

It was a Sunday morning. I got up early and rushed out for bus at half past six. Obviously, it was not a usual day-actually,it was my first day as a teacher.

”It won＇t be a hard job.“ I thought after Mr. Lu phoned the week before, informing my being employed as an English teacher of a spare time school in which he was the director. I didn＇t find any difficulty in my new job：the texts were very simple and the students I was going to teach were only primary school pupils, which expelled my worry about making mistakes before them. However, I was afraid that I did not at all look like a teacher and as a result, the students, wouldn＇t listen to me.

I almost spent an hour and a half on the way to school. As soon as I arrived, I rushed to Mr. Lugs office. There, with some other new comers, I listened to Mr. Lugs explanation of working rules, teachers＇ duties and the curriculum. Everything was all right as I had wished until I came to the door of my class room. The bell had already rung, but the class was racketing as a rock contest. ”How can I manage such a group of naughty children?“ I hesitated and then stepped in.

It was a small class with altogether 20 students. Some boys were chasing each other madly in delirious glee while some girls were chatting loudly in an exceptionally sharp voice. Strange enough, as they noticed me, they all returned to their seats and stopped talking. The only reason I could think out for this was that I looked like a teacher, at least in their eyes, which was a great relief to me. After a brief self-introduction, I went on to give my first lesson in English as I had prepared. To my disappointment, all my little students put on a confusing face, their eyes full of puzzle. Someone murmured, ”I don＇t understand."And all the others echoed with nodding. They were mostly in grade 5. I must have overestimated them. I switched to Chinese at once.

in control was a great challenge.

The first day of my teaching was not perfect but satisfying enough. Since then I had got to know how a teacher should perform and all the situations that a teacher would run into. Though my teaching has been much improved so far, the first day of the job still remains deep in my mind.

Earlier that day, a friend called me to tell me that our mutual friend Rosy was arriving back from after the summer holidays. Since there was no airport in the immediate vicinity of the university, she would need a ride to come back on campus.

Being mildly interested in that girl, I jumped at the chance to play hero.The trip was not particular long or arduous.I was to pick her up from a friend’s home that was a mere 80 miles from campus—a piece of cake, I said to myself.

Everything went well.The country road was almost deserted.Visibility was good and I was not driving very fast. The conversation was lively but not distracting.

About half an hour into the drive, I rounded a corner and noticed two small children, aged around 10, waiting to cross the road after getting off their school bus.My mind was not particularly focused on them because I thought they would not cross the road when a truck was coming through on their side.The two kids looked to their left, watching the truck intensely. As soon as the truck passed, and without a thought, they started to dash across the road.I was petrified, to say the least. My heart almost leaped out of my throat. Time seemed to have come to a standstill. It was like a nightmare coming into reality. I felt I was in the slow motion crash scene of a movie. I did not even have the time to brake or steer clear.

By providence smiled on me that day. The two kids missed my car by less than an inch. Imagine what would have happened if I had hit them? They would have been killed instantly. I would have been charged with manslaughter and thrown into jail. My career would be over before it even got started. The kind of inhumane treatment I would receive from fellow inmate, I could only guess but hate to imagine. I will never be a whole person again even if I were to be released early for good behavior. My life would be over. Even if I had a good lawyer that could have gotten me off, I would have carried that guilt in my mind for the rest of my life.
