Knowing where one is heading during navigation brings assured happiness. As a student majoring in Computer Software, I began my odyssey four years ago. Now, after the initial mysticism was gradually unveiled, my curiosity remains the same. Indeed, having entered this splendid computer world, I am more than greedy for something new.
From the beginning of my study, my endeavor was fixed on the underlying branches of Computer Science, particularly System Software development. Novel applications on other’s platform may be fruitful, but I think it’s more appealing to act as an independent “manager”. In fact, mathematics, OS, DBMS and modern compiler are all the examples, any breakthrough of which would push forward the whole industry. Individuality is achieved in this unique position.
My paces toward this goal are always steady. As mathematics permeates to the every corner of Computer Science, I am eager to see how it functions. I took courses offered by the Mathematics Department including Mathematical Analysis and Advanced Algebra. The curriculum also covered Discrete Mathematics, Probability & Statistics and Theoretical Computer Science. As supplement to my scope of knowledge, I learn by myself Combination Mathematics and the Science of Programming. This really made a hard period of time, but the harvest was rewarding. I come to understand that even the most irrelevant software disciplines have the origins in common. The importance of Fractured Geometry in Computer Graphics is already obvious. What if a step furthers toward TSP or Bin Packing? Immeasurable. Then came my favorite topics: Operating System, Compiler and Database. I worked hard and derived bits of my own insight. In fact, I was greatly encouraged to find some of my ideas successfully implemented in the corresponding course projects. My final grade is straight “As” in these coursed. In short, although my experience in Computer Science is still limited, I believe its depth is well accessible. As my advisor, Prof. Fang Yu, put it figuratively in one of his lectures: “ It makes no difference whether a hunter captures 5 or 7 rabbits. What counts is he knows how to use his gun.”
I think I can be the qualified shooter now. in my undergraduate years, I have earned various kinds of scholarships, among which were “Peking University Fellowship” and “Excellent Academic Scholarship”. My overall GPA ranks upper 10% among 48 students of the same grade. Because of my satisfactory performance, I was granted the honor of entering the graduate program at Peking University directly, waived of the admission test. In retrospect, my workload is always heavy but it is worth my time of effort. Presently, I have both adequate theoretical understanding and rich programming experience. READY I AM.
Of all the sub-areas of Computer Science, my major interest is parallel processing and the related compiler construction. The terminology of parallel processing came to me when I read an article about digital circuit testing. According to this article, there exist many serial approaches of solving the automatic test pattern generation (ATPG) problem. Though certain method of solving ATPG sometimes proved efficient, the computation time for a method of solving ATPG sometimes proved efficient, the computation time for a complete result is intolerable, the a parallel processing machine is proposed. Using paralleled ATPG method, this NP complete dilemma is ingeniously handled. After reading, I surprisingly realized that parallel processing opened a new window for the computationally intensive problems, which prove intractable for the VON NEUMANN Architecture. You can always first split a specific computational task into several independent divisions, then assign each part to a certain processor. With reasonable partition and proper synchronization, most grueling scientific applications can be reduced to normal scale problems.
With the advent of the multiprocessor architecture, compiler optimization faced a new challenge. A compiler not only has to translate, but it is also responsible for generating parallel-processing loop provides a rich opportunity of exploiting parallelism. Therefore, finding an optimum strategy for loops because a hot research topic. On the whole, parallelism changes our view toward the conventional computer architecture so that the compiler’s construction must make the corresponding modification. Because of this challenging characteristic, I choose them to be my interest of future study.
Yet parallel processing is far from maturity. It has been observed that some sequential algorithms can be easily translated into fast parallel algorithms while some others may not. Is every sequential computation can be done efficiently in parallel? If not, what properties result in such distinction? Another unsettled problem is programming parallel computers now is like programming serial computers in the 1960s. Programmers get locked into a particular manufacturer’s computers. Is it possible for us to design a higher level language for parallel computers that hides the underlying machine architecture from users? Both are crying out for solution.
Without advanced knowledge, I can do nothing but wait. In order to convert my undergraduate study into full play, graduate education is a necessity. From the college guide and my advisor’s recommendation, I am pleased to learn that your department has an academic atmosphere where originality is appreciated and individual potential is explored. It will be the best place for my specialized study. If possible, my main interest in the future will be in the following areas:
Parallel processing, Compiler construction.
Distributed/concurrent systems, Operating system.
Machine learning, Automated fault diagnosis.
As my undergraduate education is very basic, if you feel that I am more suited for some other areas, any of your suggestion would be highly appreciated.
Upon the completion of my study, I would return to Peking University and teach what I’ve learned to the students. Then I shall establish a research center to experiment new ideas. It is my ultimate goal to see the Chinese computer products leading the global market in the next century. After all, the navigation is not over yet!
Yours sincerely,

Dear _,
Ever since childhood I have enjoyed working with my hands. Whether as an eight year- old gluing together a model car or an adolescent assembling a bookshelf in woodworking class, I thrived on the challenges of precise and meticulous tasks. Throughout high school I have been intrigued by the sciences, but it was not until I read about late-breaking discoveries and research in the field of genetics that my interests in science intensified. When I entered the University of British Columbia (UBC), I naturally chose to specialize in Cell Biology and Genetics.
In my sophomore year at UBC, I first began to seriously consider dentistry as a career. At that time, I began to appreciate the important role that dentistry played in my life. Four years earlier, I began an orthodontic treatment program with Dr. Junni Wang to correct a severe crowding problem with my teeth. Both before and during the treatment, I was a most reluctant participant; not many teenagers look forward to braces filling their mouth during their last two years of high school, and I was no different.
However, at every monthly check-up for three-and-a-half years the office staff had nothing but kind words of encouragement and optimism. Now after the completion of the treatment I had reason to smile. Dr. Wang helped turn me from a shy adolescent who feared smiling into a confident, outgoing young man. His skills not only brought back my smile, but also my sense of confidence in all aspects of my life. Whereas once I feared drawing attention to myself and thus shied away from leadership posts and debates, now I am a completely different person. Hoping to feel as satisfied and gratified as Dr. Wang must have felt in improving not only my smile but my entire way of life, I look forward to improving the oral health of patients on a daily basis and participating in dentistry’ s friendly, team-oriented work environment.
After this preliminary ‘ patient-doctor’ exposure to dentistry, I substantially increased my involvement in the field to determine if dentistry really was for me. My participation with the UBC Pre-Dental Society allowed me to communicate with various professionals in the field. I also investigated opportunities to volunteer in the University Dental Clinic or participate in research work. After speaking to a couple of professors in the UBC Faculty of Dentistry asking them about research opportunities, I found a topic that interested me. Dr. Putnins, of the Division of Periodontics, offered me a position in his lab to conduct a semi-quantitative analysis to determine the levels of endotoxin in dental unit water lines.
After taking many water samples from the University Dental Clinic and quantifying the amounts of endotoxin (lipopolysaccahride) in those samples with an Limulus Abeocyte Lysate test, I prepared to publish dentistry’ s first account of this type of experiment. I conducted the study over a 16-week span (Jan.-Apr.‘ 98), and the research work counted as 3.0 credits towards my undergraduate degree. Because the vast majority of my work was self-directed, I submitted my findings for evaluation by the faculty in a 32-page report with 46 references, and I also defended my methods before a panel of professors. Impressed by the findings and results, Dr. Putnins will use my study as a key component of a journal article he is currently preparing for the Journal of Dental Research (JDR). The school also submitted an abstract of my findings for presentation at the upcoming 77th General Session of the International Association of Dental Research (IDAR) to be held at Vancouver, Canada. I am keenly looking forward to this unique opportunity to have my work appear before distinguished members of the dental research community. My positive research experience definitely helped reinforce my goal of becoming a dentist.
In addition, my employment as a Canada Customs Inspector has helped me improve my level of social awareness and helped me develop qualities I can usefully apply to dentistry. As a Customs Inspector, I had the opportunity to communicate effectively with many different types of people in various situations. I have also developed the ability to resolve conflicts, defuse difficult situations, and show empathy even during cases of enforcement. In addition, my experience with team sports has provided me with leadership skills that can not be taught in any textbook. As the captain of my hockey team and the coach of a children’ s team, I have developed excellent communication skills and the ability to identify and work effectively with kids. All of these qualities will prove very important to my future career in dentistry.
Attracted by the dental profession’ s ability to positively impact people’ s lives, just like my orthodontist, and by the profession’ s financially rewarding and stable lifestyle, I look forward to one day opening my own practice and becoming a well-respected member of both the community of dentists and the community of patients. While my GPA may not be as high as some applicants’ , my academic record shows a consistent positive. I know I have the intelligence, ability, and determination to achieve success in dentistry; I only need the opportunity. My dental research experience combined with my academic background, personal qualities, and leadership abilities makes me well suited to accept the challenges in the field of dentistry. I look forward to an interview and the chance to discuss my qualifications in person.
Yours sincerely,
xuexila

From an early age I have been fascinated by the workings of life. The humanbody is a remarkable machine with many diverse systems producing an organismthat could never be artificially reproduced. My love of science is just one ofmy reasons for choosing medicine. I enjoy a challenge particularly towards arewarding objective and although medicine is a tough career it can be enormouslygratifying, highlighted by the doctors I have spoken to during my experience andon a personal level.
To further my insight into the medical field I participated in a workshadowing week at a GP surgery. I gained a valuable understanding of theworkings of the surgery, with opportunities to observe and speak to the doctorsregarding a medical career. I arranged another placement week myself at a localhospital, which was a superb opportunity to observe medicine from another pointof view. I observed the ward rounds, an MRI scan, a skin biopsy and an endosocpyclinic all which I found interesting. I spent the most time with the haematologyteam, responsible for patients with diseases such as Chronic MyelogenousLeukaemia (CML), haematology being one of my interests it was captivating that Icould see the specialty from a more complex side than the AS biology course. Forexample I was able to understand how the level of platelets affects bloodclotting. Throughout the week I expanded my confidence and communication skillsthrough speaking to patients and doctors. Although I enjoyed the week it was attimes extremely heart-rending, I was able to get close to many of the terminallyill patients helping and caring for them where I could, getting them tea or justtalking and empathising with them to build their spirits. I volunteered at alocal home for the elderly which was very rewarding as I built my caring skills, helping residents by making them tea or playing cards with them. At school Itook part in a paired reading scheme for 6 months where I was able to help youngchildren to read, speaking and listening to them to help their English. All myexperience has made me more determined to accomplish my ambition to be adoctor.
My love of science and aspiration for a medical career is reflected in myA-Level choices where good time management, self motivated study skills andability to cope with stress and pressure are essential. Biology and chemistryhave helped me further my interest and develop my analytical skills, maths helpsmy problem solving skills helping me to work logically and ICT gives me avaluable insight into the rapidly developing technological world where computersare crucial. I believe all the qualities I have developed through my courses areessential for any good doctor. I have participated in the Duke of Edinburghaward scheme which enabled me to achieve a first aid certificate includingcardiopulmonary resuscitation training. I also enhanced my inter-personal,communication and team building abilities, valuable skills for any medicaloccupation, as I witnessed during my experience. For 2 years I have volunteeredat a local vet hospital observing and helping out 2 hours per week communicatingwith the public in a different environment. I enjoy reading, mainly factualbooks to expand my general knowledge. To relax, I enjoy sports includingfootball, and cricket for which I was captain of the school team and my localteam for the past 3 years improving my leadership skills. I also recentlyrekindled my childhood passion for golf, another pastime I enjoy even if it is alittle expensive!
I am a self motivated, determined individual and I look forward to thesocial and academic challenges of university. I am aware of the demands of amedical career but my commitment and desire to become a doctor has only beenstrengthened through my experience and work in a voluntary capacity.
Dear xx,
The world is forever growing and evolving, as is the demand for newbuildings and good infrastructure. The pressures of population growth and globalwarming are ever increasing, and civil engineers can help play a major role indesigning more efficient structures, as well as planning projects in developingcountries. I am attracted to me to civil engineering because I like the idea ofhelping to shape the world around me to meet the demands of the future. I hopefor a challenging career which I will find personally rewarding and be able tofeel that I have given something back to the community.
Academically, science has always been my main interest and is the area inwhich I am most able. I enjoyed biology, in particular learning about humanimpact on the environment. However, during my A levels I realised that myinterests lay deeper in maths and physics. I enjoyed the problem solvinginvolved within my subjects and the way a real life situation could be expressedand manipulated mathematically. What I found particularly interesting wasrelating what had been learnt in the classroom to real life situations, which iswhat gave me more interest in civil engineering - the appeal of a challengingcareer where I would have the opportunity to theoretically solve problems andpractically apply solutions to have a beneficial effect on the world aroundme.
During my gap year I have had several work experience placements in variousskilled trades such as building and joinery. Through joinery I gained anappreciation of the need for accurate design and construction, as well as aknowledge of the uses of wood as a building material. Though much of thebuilding work I have undertaken was in construction, I found it to be invaluableexperience. For example, whilst helping to build a garage I learnt about theimportance of good design and planning by having to interpret the designs inorder to determine how many bricks would be needed. During its constuction Inoticed how important it was to build accurately, particually at the corners ofthe building which supported most of the weight of the roof. I also discoveredthe importance of keeping costs low, but the quality of work high. We made adifferent type of cement which was cheaper and weaker, but still met the needsfor the inner walls. The most rewarding part of this experience seeing theproject through from a plan on paper to its completion, and the feeling ofsatisfaction once it was completely built.
I have a passionate interest in music and have been playing guitar forabout 5 years. I have enjoyed my time as a member of a band, which has helped meto work creatively as part of a team. More recently, I have also achieved grade2 in jazz piano. For years I have had a great enthusiasm for skateboarding andin November 20xx began undertaking voluntary work with a group helping to planand design a skateboarding facility in Kings Heath park. We were involved inpreparatory work such as gaining public support and undertaking research atexisting facilities across the UK, as well as its design. From this experience Ilearnt the importance of working as part of a team and meeting deadlines. Also,I gained an understanding of just how much preparation and organisation isneeded, even for a small development.
By studying civil engineering at university I hope to build on my knowledgeof maths and physics and learn how to apply it to real life situations. Havingenjoyed my time at school I am excited by the prospect of going to universityand learning more about our world around us. I hope for both a challenging anddiverse career where I can help to improve the world for future generations tocome.
Dear _,
Having a flair for Economics and accounting I have decided that I want a degree in Accounting and Finance or Management. The many brilliant representatives of the management community around the world have strengthened that resolve.
When I worked in my school as a tutor of English as a Second Language for students from a community school in Muscat, I realized the importance of a strong leader who could organize, command respect, and be able to work well with others. These ideas were further enforced by my month long internship at Novartis Pharmaceutical (Accounts and Finance Department and Human Resources Department).
I attended the Harvard Model Congress in Paris and won the Award of Distinction. One skill in particular that contributed to this award was my confident public speaking.
The last 4 months have been crucial in my learning of real world business and economics. For my IB Extended Essay, titled “To What Extent Does Subway in Oman Operate as an Oligopoly”, I set out to prove the oligpolistic structure of the fast food market in Oman. In this effort, I have come across many real life complexities in pricing behaviour, profit making and other aspects of the Theory of the Firm. While attempting to explain these alternate theories of firms I have developed a keen interest in analyzing and understanding how the world of business works.
After an undergraduate degree in accounting and finance or management I plan to go onto post graduate studies and work on an MBA. A strong performance in a BA will allow me to move onto an MBA and only then shall I be satisfied.
For the last four years I have been part of our schools volleyball team ICE. We have retained our ISAC (Inter Schools Activities Conference, Middle East) title for four years. Playing in the power hitters (spiker) position requires immense physical fitness and to accomplish that I regularly go to the gym for fitness training. I am also part of my school track and field team. Being the fastest sprinter in the school since 11th grade the 100m, 200m and 400m races are my specialty even though I still pursue long distance running. In my spare time I explore and master the computer as I am conversant with a Visual Basic Programming course. It is imperative for me to have the latest hardware and software and I make it a point to install everything myself. I also learn Urdu as it is my native tongue and a link to my culture, to maintain that is crucial.
Living in a diverse international community of over 52 nationalities has allowed to me recognize and appreciate different cultures. With the experience I have and the strong motivation to craft a bright future I feel I can justify my decision to pursue a career in Accounting and Finance or Management.
Yours sincerely,

Dear _,
I have always enjoyed and achieved highly in science and maths. I also appreciate problem solving and the feeling of achievement associated with the practical use of design and technology, which I studied to GCSE level. Throughout the course I worked with materials including plastics, woods, and metals and designed and built various items including a table lamp and a propagator for germinating seeds.
I have been involved in various projects with my father, including erecting a pergola, a wooden shed and building a large brick shed at the bottom of the garden. I also constructed a wooden chicken coop to my own design. These projects have given me an insight into dealing with building regulations and the need for planning, design and accurate measurement. I have gained experience in the use of building materials, taking both cost and physical properties into account.
Studying civil engineering at university will provide me the opportunity to further study the areas of science, maths, design and technology that I enjoy, as well as to gain many other skills. Studying civil engineering will offer me a wide range of challenging and fulfilling career opportunities. I would like to apply for the foundation year, which after completion, will allow me to progress onto the civil engineering course. I am particularly interested in how civil engineering skills can be applied with maximum benefit to society whilst having minimum impact on the environment.
I did two weeks work experience with a consultant paediatrician in ------- Hospital in ---------- during the Easter holidays of 2008. I also did two weeks work experience with a general dental practitioner in ----------------. Both of these experiences showed me the importance of communication skills, leadership and teamwork in the smooth running of an organisation. After further consideration, I realised that I would not be happy in the healthcare profession and instead was drawn more towards civil engineering, which I feel is closer to my interests.
During the last two years, I have participated in the school???s community action group, which involved weekly visits to a retirement home in -------- to organise a coffee morning for the elderly residents. We served tea and biscuits and provided company to those who attended. During the school???s activities week in June I helped out in classes at the ------- School for children with special educational needs. Outside school, I did voluntary work at St. Anne???s Hospice charity shop on Saturday mornings. I have also received a certificate from Millennium Volunteers for completing 117 hours of voluntary work.
