In the modern society, advertisement has already pervaded all sides of people’s daily life.Advertisement design makes use of reader’s various psychologies, such as vanity, emotion, fear, superiority complex or money saving, to lure them into buy a goods.

Generally speaking, readers will not have much time to analyze the language of advertisement, so the form, the language structure and the content of advertisement must be attractive and straightforward as well.These requirements do make advertisement language have its own features.

In this paper, we will analyze some commercial advertisements, the most common type of advertisement in our daily life to illustrate its language features, especially from the rhetoric usage.

Rhetoric Features of Advertisement English

1.Figure of Speech

Figure of speech means that word or phrase are used for vivid or dramatic effect and it is one of the frequently used rhetoric methods in advertisement English.It includes simile, metaphor and metonymy.

Simile shows the similarity of two different things and“like”or“as”are used to connect these two things.

广告,足为了某种特定的需要.通过一定的媒介形式公开而“泛地向社会传递信息的一种宣传手段。”而招聘广告是企业或机构应业务或管理工作的需要,通过报纸、广播、电视向社会招募人才的一种广告形式,实用性很强,蕴含着丰富的人际意义。Hallidav指出,语言具有三大基本的元功能,即概念功能、人际功能、语篇功能。人际功能指的是人们运用语言和其他人交流,里立和维持社会关系,表达自己的态度和观点从而影响他人的观点和行动。他主要从语气,情态两方面进行研究,使得他的整个語法系统结构严密、语言精确。rhompson认为评价意义是所有语篇意义的核心,凡是对语篇的人际功能的研究都不能忽视它。Martin据此发展了功能语言学,建立了“评价系统理论”。本文试图以Ha11idav的系统功能语法中的人际功能和Martin评价系统为理论框架,以30篇英文招聘广告为语料,从语气、情态、及评价系统三方面对其进行人际意义分析.探求了该类广告是如何运用人际意义达到劝说受话者应聘的交际目的。

1 语气分析

语气是表达言语功能的,韩礼德认为,根据交际过程中言语角色和交换物的不同,可以归纳出四个主要的言语功能:提供、陈述、命令、提问。除“提供”功能没有典型的语气来体现以外,体现陈述功能的一半是陈述语气,体现“提问”功能的是疑问语气,体现“命令”功能的祈使语气。人们在日常交际过程中,既用陈述句来给予信息,又用疑问句来寻求信息。据语料库数据显示97%的语句郁为陈述句,招聘广告的发话者通过陈述句来表明招聘公叫、职位、招聘对象的要求及应聘途径,具有客观性。

2 情态分析

情态是人际意义的又一重要组成部分。说话者正是通过情态将话题的主旨、说话者的立场以及结论的正确有效性巧妙的结合起来。情态由两部分组成:情态和意态。前者是说话者对某一话语命题的可能性和经常性判断;后者是说话者对某一话语命题涵盖的义务和意愿的判断。在对这三十篇招聘广告的情态统计中,我们发现发话人为表达所述命题的可能性,使用最频繁的情态标记是will和can。情态动词will在句中通常表示承诺。在文本中will的使用表达了招聘方对于所述事件和行为的较强烈和肯定的语气,保证求职者若加入企业将会得到的利益、发展机会等。can在文本中主要用来提供信息,表达的可能性要比will弱。与可能性相比,表达命题的经常性的情态在语料库中很少见(如never, hap-pen to be)。语料中,意态中义务的表达大多是由情态动词must和should来实现的,也有一些文本使用need.have to,be required to。be expected to表达所提供的工作职位的职责和要求。招聘方最常用will和隐喻表达be committed t0表达他们的意愿来劝说潜在的申请者。

本文从语气、情态及对话性三方面对网上招聘广告的人际意义进行了尝试性的分析.并探讨了招聘广告如何通过巧妙运用语篇语气、情态及对话性来最终达到劝说读者申请职位的目的。同时,这对我们的英语写作教学也是有启发的,如在写作中恰当地运用语气结构、情态表达、评价意义等表达人际意义,拉近作者和读者的社会和心理距离,提高对话性.从而成功地达到交际目的。

英文广告中预设触发语的分析 篇7

预设触发语

预设 (presupposition) 亦称前提, 常常被定义为发话者在说出某个特定的句子时所作的假设, 即说话者为保证句子或语段的适宜性而必须满足的前提或“说话者或写作者假定对方已知晓的信息”。预设是说话人假定听话人知道的、能促成言语行为顺利实施的适切条件或知识。从话语理解的角度来探讨, 语用预设具有两大特征:合适性和共知性。就预设本身而言, 它具有单向性、主观性和隐蔽性三个特点。

预设作为一种隐含于话语中的意义, 其深层来源是说话人的主观设定, 其表层来源则是话语中的特定词语或特定结构即预设是以某些词语、某些句式为基础的。也就是说, 能产生预设的词语或特定结构是预设触发语。许多语言学家对触发语作过研究, 其中Karttunen (1973) 收集了31种这样的触发语, Levinson (1983) 列出了主要的13种触发语。现对其简化并归并如下:

限定性词语。如s’、the、your、prope noun等。它们可以触发相应的预设。

特定含义的动词。主要有:1.叙实性动词 (factive verbs) 。如know、realize、regret、以及be aware、be glad that、be sad that等等。这些触发语所触发的预设是它们所反映的是已发生的事实。2.含蓄性动词 (implicativeverbs) 。含蓄性动词是指具有某种暗含意义的动词, 其暗含意义就是它所触发的语句的预设。比如manage就暗含“曾设法去做”。类似的还有forget、happen、avoid等。3.状态变化类动词 (change-ofstate verbs) 。这类动词包括begin, continue、fmish、stop、tum等。

分句结构。分裂句、比较句、疑问句等很多分句可以触发预设。

英文广告中预设触发语的分析

作者从《People》、《reader’s Digest》、《Time》等一些著名的英文杂志搜集了100个广告, 主要对这些广告的标题和标语中的预设触发语分布规律以及预设触发语的使用频率及原因进行研究。因为标题和标语是一个广告的精华功能, 就是吸引读者注意力并获得他们的支持最终实施购买行为或采取相关行动。

根据统计分析, 在所收集的广告语料中限定性词语触发语所占比例最大, 为38.54%, 其次是比较分句 (14.58%) 、疑问句 (12.5%) 、叙实性动词 (8.33%) , 其他的触发语出现的频率较低。下面分析部分广告中预设触发语的使用情况。

限定性词语触发语。用来对意义进行限定的单词或短语称为限定类词, 包括定冠词、专有名词、所有格结构等。这类触发语一般形成存在预设。如:

This Valentine’s Day, thinks outsidethe box of chocolates.

上面这则广告中“This”预设存在“Valentine’s Day” (情人节) 这个节日, 而“the”预设情人节时人们习惯于选择一盒巧克力作为礼物。广告商要传递的信息是这个情人节大家不妨考虑选择此种蛋糕来代替巧克力。通过使用预设触发语“This”和“the”, 广告商不必费力地赘述上述信息, 从而节省了篇幅、空间和广告费用。又如:

Scott tissue’s gone soft.

上面的广告中专有名词“Scott”预设存在品牌为“Scott”的厕纸, 并且预设“Scott”厕纸过去并不柔软, 现在变得越来越柔软了, 劝说消费者购买这个品牌的纸。

特定含义的动词触发语。主要包括以下三种:

1. 叙实性动词 (factive verbs)

叙实性动词即表达事实的动词, 如know、realize、regret, 以及be aware、be glad that、be sad that, 等等。叙实性动词触发事实预设。如:

How do you recognize quality?Here’sone good gauge.

“recognize”预设人们衡量汽车的好坏有自己的尺度。一般来说, 质量就是尺度。Buick牌汽车质量已经领先其他汽车, 成为衡量汽车好坏的尺度。也就是说, Buick牌汽车是质量最好的汽车, 如果买汽车, 请选择Buick牌汽车。

2. 含蓄性动词 (implicative verbs)

含蓄性动词是指具有某种暗含意义, 不直接表达出来的动词, 其暗含意义为它所触发的语句的预设。比如manage暗含“曾设法去做”。类似的还有forget、happen等。

You managed to reduce your cholesterol?Introducing Minute Maid Heart Wisewithadded cholesterol reducers.

触发语“manage”的使用, 一方面预设消费者们曾经很努力减少体内胆固醇的含量, 另一方面向消费者推出一种新型饮料即Minute Maid Heart Wise, 添加了胆固醇分解器, 帮助减少体内的胆固醇, 从而拥有健康的身体。

3.状态变化类动词 (change-of-stateverbs)

状态变化类动词指有行为变化的词, 包括stop、finish、begin、start、arrive、enter、come、go、turn等。

At Crown Motors, we continue to in-novate and better ourselves to bring our service system to perfection.

状态类词“continue”预设丰田汽车公司 (Toyota) 一直在改善售后服务体制, 直至处于完美状态。广告中没有直接说丰田公司比其他汽车公司都好, 但却暗含了这层含义。消费者很容易相信丰田公司不仅拥有一流的产品质量, 而且具备完善的服务体制。

分句结构。主要包括以下四种:

1.时间从句

时间从句主要是由before、while、when、since、after、whenever和as引导的从句。广告商利用时间从句来预设消费者已经经历的状态和行为。

After introducing the qrstfiat bed inbusiness class, we’re defining the meaning of comfort again, using the latest.

由“after”引导的时间从句预设在商业课堂上曾经介绍过第一张扁平的、舒适的床。事实上广告商强调的是这种床并不是十分舒适, 他们正在重新定义“舒适”的含义, 生产出真正舒适的床。这样很容易激起消费者的兴趣和购买欲望。

2. 分裂句

分裂句在广告中经常用来传递所强调的信息。分裂句分为两类:“It’s X that主要强调句子的任何部分, “Who/What/When/How/Why…is…”强调主语或宾语。如:It’s Banana Nut Bread that you can eat with a spoon.

上面广告中的分裂句强调主语“Banana Nut Bread”, 预设它是一种可以用勺子吃的面包。分裂句作为预设触发语可以让消费者很容易记住这种面包的名字。

3. 比较从句

比较从句一般由比较词或短语引导, 有时可以省略。一般来说, 消费者购物前“货比三家”, 才会做出购买决定。广告商正是利用这种心理, 在广告中尽量地展示自己产品中独一无二的品质和服务。

less、more和the fastest用作触发语, 后面“than”省略了。预设乘坐Airbus A340-500班机比其他班机飞行时间短、获得更多的游玩时间, 因此它是最快的班机。看到这样的广告, 很多游客都会选择Airbus A340-500班机。

4. 疑问句

广告中的疑问句主要分为两类:yes/no questions和“Wh-”questions。yes/no疑问句的答案是“Yes”或“No”, 而“Wh-”疑问句需要具体的答案。

Have you had your 3 today?

这则广告预设你每天都要吃3-A-Day奶酪。广告商提出这样的问题是为了吸引消费者的兴趣, 不论答案是“Yes”or“No”, 他们都成了这个产品潜在的消费者。

结语

预设触发语作为广告的一种诱导机制, 在广告语言中使用非常普遍。预设触发语的使用一方面可以使广告语言简洁、多样化, 使其更具有说服力, 给读者留下深刻的印象;另一方面还可以推导出不同类型的预设, 不管预设的内容是否属实, 都会诱使消费者实施购买行为。在广告制作中广告商可以根据实际的需求恰当地利用预设触发语来传达广告信息、发展广告策略, 最终制作出更具吸引力, 更成功的广告案例。

The target audiences of English advertisements and Chinese advertisements are completely different. So the translators should take the differences of consumers into consideration. By applying the core theory of pragmatic perspective—Adaptation Theory， the paper mainly discusses how the classical translations of English advertisements adapt the target audiences. 一、广告与顺应论

广告是人们生活中不可缺少的一部分。它充当着信息导航的角色，给消费者提供一定参考。随着商品经济全球化的日益发展，英文广告已经渗透到生活的方方面面，影响着人类的衣食住行。近年来，对于英文广告的研究，尤其是广告翻译的研究也日渐增多。综观此类研究，笔者发现其中更多的是经验的总结以及广告翻译的技巧类型，如音译，直译，意译等。

1999年，比利时语言学家维索尔伦在其著作《语用学新解（Understanding Pragmatics）中提出语言顺应论。顺应理论以语言的选择顺应为基本点，通过探究人们使用语言的心理机制及语言的生成机制，揭示语言使用的本质。顺应理论的基本观点是：语言交际是一个动态的语言选择过程。语言使用者之所以能够不断做出选择是因为语言本身具有的特性：变异性、商讨性、顺应性。顺应理论的研究视角包括以下四个方面，即语境关系的顺应、语言结构的顺应、顺应的动态性以及顺应过程中的意识突显。语言的选择必须与语境相顺应。维索尔伦把语境划分为交际语境及语言语境。交际语境包括语言使用者本身及其物理世界，社交世界及心理世界等因素。这一理论是一套系统完整的语用学理论，对语用现象具有极强的包容力和解释力。因此，运用顺应论研究广告语这一特殊语用形式，具有其必要性及指导性。本文将重点研究英文广告语在汉译过程中，语言的选择对交际语境的顺应。

二、英文广告语汉译对交际语境的顺应

英文广告语的汉译是两种语码的转换。在此转换过程中，译者对语码的选择需与广告受众所处的交际语境相顺应。

1.英文广告汉译对受众社交世界的顺应。社交世界包括社交场合、社会环境、规范交际者言语行为的原则和准则（Verschueren，2000）。交际者的言语行为要受到社会和文化规范的制约。对于英文广告的汉译，译者要考虑到受众的社交规范及社会文化准则等因素。

例1. Life is a journey. Enjoy the ride. （NISSAN）

译：生活是一次旅行。祝您旅途愉快。（尼桑汽车）

上例中，原英文广告语中Enjoy the ride是祈使句，带有祈使，命令的语气，含义为：好好享受旅程。但译者考虑到受众的社交言语习惯，把原文译为：祝您旅途愉快。把祈使句译为祝福语。这种礼貌的祝福语遵循了礼貌原则，使译入的广告语更容易被受众接受。

例2. Theres life after sex.

译：在性之外还有生活。（防止艾滋病公益广告）

这是美国的一则公益广告，目的是使人们防止艾滋病。在美国，人们对性的态度相对开放，所以广告语中直接出现了“sex”一词。但是在中国，人们谈性色变，羞于谈此话题。译者考虑到受众的社会文化准则这一因素，间接、迂回地处理了after sex这一短语，将重心转移到life一词。所以将原文译为：在性之外还有生活。译文暗含：人生不只是性爱，还有多姿多彩的美好生活。译者这样处理既巧妙地回避了性这一话题，又准确地转达了原文的信息。

例3. My Goodness！ My Guinness！ （Guinness啤酒广告）

译：此酒只应天上有——Guinness啤酒。

这是一则Guinness啤酒的广告。Goodness意指上帝，广告商将Goodness与Guinness并列对比，生动地展现了此酒的质量，形象表现出人们在喝啤酒时赞不绝口的情形。在对此广告汉译时，假设直译，译文便是“我的上帝！我的Guinness啤酒”，中国消费者会感到一头雾水，因为中国人在表达赞叹之情时，很少提到上帝，译文不符合汉语的言语文化习惯。在这种状况下，译者借助中国一句古诗“此曲只应天上有”，进而将广告翻译成“此酒只应天上有—Guinness啤酒”。这则译文既顺应了中国传统文化，又能够使消费者对这句译语印象深刻。

2.英文广告汉译对受众物理世界的顺应。物理世界是一种实在的、看得见摸得着的语境，包括特定的主体、对象、时间、空间（场景）、话题五个因素。物理世界五要素的任一变化都会使交际者产生特定心理，都会影响交际形式的选择和语言的选择。

例4. Just do it！（Nike）

译：事在人为！（耐克）

例5. There is no right answer. （Qiaodan）

译：凡事无绝对。（乔丹）

例6. I can play！（Peak）

译：我能，无限可能！（匹克）

以上三则均为运动品牌的广告语。运动品牌的大部分消费群体是年轻人，译者在翻译这些英文广告时要考虑到消费群体的年龄特点，年轻人充满活力，未来有无限可能。这几则广告语的汉译都顺应了受众的物理世界，翻译给人以力量，使年轻人容易接受。同时“事在人为“及”凡事无绝对“两则翻译更像是父母在教育孩子为人处世之道，这也进一步顺应了受众的物理世界中的空间（场景）及话题等因素。

3.英文广告汉译对受众心理世界的顺应。心理世界指交际者的认知要素和情感要素等，包括交际者的特性、心情、愿望、意图。成功的交际行为必须对交际对象的心思世界有深入的洞察与准确的把握，翻译也不例外。好的广告语的翻译要紧密地与受众的心理感受，体验结合在一起。在汉译英语广告语时，译者应该依据受众的心思特点与审美品味，对原文做一定的调整，力图使翻译能引起目的语消费群体的共鸣，进而更好地被其接受和认可。

例7. Good to the last drop.（Maxwell）

译：滴滴香浓，意犹未尽。（麦斯威尔咖啡）

例8. Intelligence everywhere. （Motorola phone）

译：智慧演绎，无处不在。（摩托罗拉手机）

以上两则分别是麦斯威尔咖啡及摩托罗拉手机的广告语。麦氏咖啡的汉译广告语之所以能够成为广告界的经典，在于其关注消费者的体验，把麦氏咖啡的醇香与内心的感受紧紧结合起来。“滴滴香浓，意犹未尽”一语道出了品味咖啡时的心情及意境。摩托罗拉手机广告语的汉译也堪称经典，“智慧演绎，无处不在”既突出了手机的品质，又强调了手机的受欢迎程度，译者顺应了受众的心思特点及审美品味。同时两例译文都采用汉语四字句式，使人吟读起来朗朗上口，似乎即刻就能把人带到美妙的意境中去，译文在效果上将原文神韵发扬得淋漓尽致。

三、结语

随着中国经济的快速发展，越来越多的进口产品进入中国市场，这些产品的广告语翻译也日益重要。英文广告与中文广告的受众不同，因此在将英文广告汉译时，译者要充分考虑在汉语习惯中，广告受众的言语习惯及社会交际习惯等各方面因素。本文重点研究了英文广告的汉译是如何顺应广告受众的交际语境的。译者在汉译英文广告时要认识到广告受众的物理世界，心理世界及社交世界等方面，在语言、语气、句式及翻译技巧的选择上，要顺应受众的交际语境，进而使受众接受此广告，并进一步达到广告的目的。同时，作为广告的受众，在理解汉译的英文广告时，也可以借助于语言顺应论，正确、恰当地去解读广告。
