哥伦比亚大学工程学院二年级学生索菲亚•斯黛拉,是众多以各种方式在校参与研究工作的学生之一。这些学生有的是为了拿学分,有的是为了挣钱,还有的就是为了多一份经历。老师和学生都认为,大学生从事研究工作对师生双方都有特别的好处。的确,大学生从事研究是一种深入学习的机会,能拓展思维,而这是传统教育无法做到的。经济学教授拉尔夫•爱迪生说:“要真正学好一门课程,你得认识到:知识不是现成的,等着你去被动吸收,而是在不断地创新,所以我们得不断地进行再思考……一般来说,当学生认识到一门学科是发展的而非静止的,他们就会对学习产生更大的兴趣,因为他们看到这是个发展的过程。”他指出,做研究是一件让人兴奋的事情,因为“一项研究确实能给学生提供机会去解决现实生活中我们没有现成答案的问题。”
做研究同时也能激发学生进行独立思考并树立自信心。艾米莉亚是计算机系的研究生,她说:“你得走出课堂自己学习,没有人会用勺子喂你知识。”大学时期从事研究工作的美好回忆促使她下决心放弃在华尔街的编程工作,重返哥伦比亚大学读研究生。
哥伦比亚大学政治科学系的毕业生亚瑟•汉纳说,大学生从事研究“就像是一种全新的学习方式。”他说做研究不是让学生寻找已有的知识,而是促使他们探索尚未掌握的知识。这是一个发现空白然后再竭力填补空白的过程,与在教室里学习人们业已掌握的知识完全不同。他还认为,一项独特有创意的研究会让你的工作充满“独家创造的自豪”,这可是他在常规课程里从来没有感受到的。
多数大学生做研究是为了拿学分。他们注册一门学期课程,为老师做一个项目,老师也就会给他们的工作打分。有些系的学生通过做研究项目,可能据此写出一篇(教学计划规定之外的)论文,从而在毕业时获得(这个学科的单科优秀)荣誉。
有些学生做研究是为了挣钱。如果只是将做科研看成一种就业,这可是大学生能得到的最理想的工作之一。斯黛拉说:“我需要一份收入,与其在餐厅端盘子,不如在这里工作。”有偿研究工作使她的勤工俭学变成了充满魅力的学习机会。她的工资也有保障,因为今年启动了一项计划,给大学生研究工作提供100 000美元的基金。这笔资金将给50名大学生提供勤工俭学的研究岗位。
还有些学生做研究既不是为学分,也不是为钱,完全是出于自愿。通常,这些学生将来从事的职业需要他们关心他人,比如当医生。
正如经济学教授拉尔夫•爱迪生所说:“大学生做研究可以成为教育中宝贵的一部分,这是一项真实而有益的特权。它是特别环境下为特别的人准备的特别任务。”
学习的最佳方法——创造性模仿
我有个小儿子,我注意到他每天都在学些新东西。没过多久我就发现他在观察我,之后我做什么他就会学着做什么。就用这种简单的办法他学会了走路、跑步、开门、爬楼梯。他做这些事情从不完全学我的样子,而是添上自己创造的特色,我把他的这种学习方法称作创造性模仿。
创造性模仿让我实现了参加职业网球巡回赛的目标。我用几种方法创造性地模仿那些职业锦标赛的获胜者。我通读了在图书馆和书店里能找到的每一本有关网球的书。我仔细研究以前的每一本过期的网球杂志,寻找各种关于网球技术的文章;我在电视上观看职业选手的比赛;我把职业网球比赛实况进行录像并反复播放,有时候还要用慢镜头播放;我还去现场看职业比赛。边学边观察,将绝大部分心得写在日记里。我记的日记有好几本,还做了上千张索引卡片。这些笔记帮助我将观察心得用于实践。就这样,我从一个二流大学网球队的候补队员变成了一个在小型职业赛上能够夺冠的选手。创造性模仿使我找到了学习网球技术的最好办法。
获得博士学位不久,我打算做一个业余行当——开学习班。又是创造性模仿帮助我来实现我的目标。1985年初我买了一台电脑,这是我向商界过渡的第一步。我再一次竭尽全力学习如何在工作中使用这台电脑。我订阅了电脑期刊,学习使用电子制表软件、数据库、文字处理、制图、桌面排版系统以及大纲处理软件。我记下书本上的或是我自己思考的以及从发表的文章里得来的几乎每一个想法。我成为了一名兼职电脑软硬件经销商和顾问。
因为有了这些软件技术,我相信自己有能力在事业上做更大的事情。我意识到我能管理涉及许多同事、顾客、资源和产品等方方面面事务的复杂项目。1988年,我向社会公开办学习班,事业做得非常成功,所以我在1989年能够永远舍弃传统教育这一行。几年以后,原本只有我一个人的家庭企业发展成了一个大集团公司,至少培养了11 000名成人学习电脑和商务技术。
我的成功表明,创造性模仿的成功秘诀在于模仿世上那些成功的人和实干的人。在事业上模仿他人的最好办法就是跟踪观察他们,看他们如何行事。如果这样做得久了,又跟对了人,并且将观察到的用于实践,你就会成功。第二个最好的途径就是多听多读表率人物或者导师的所作所为,看他们是如何做到的。对他们的成功之道了解越多,助你成功的线索也就越多。
新生的友谊
大约两年前,我与三个最亲密的朋友手拉手站在寝室的阳台上,听其中一个讲述有关四个女孩的故事。这四个女孩背景不同,天赋各异。她们离开家,来到大学校园,一个叫作“幸福谷”的神秘地方。
大学一年级的最后一个晚上,我们离开朋友的寝室,来到校园的草坪上,在凌晨三点玩起了飞盘,然后坐在宿舍的台阶上一聊就是好几个小时。
艾莉莎、卡伦、加布里埃尔莉和我就像大学新生一样度过了那一天。我们去了三明治店享受那个学期的最后一顿午餐,换穿彼此的外衣,去电影院看电影,仿佛我们再也不会相见。
漫长的三个月。
对新生来说,特别是对我们来说,在第一年的年末相互道别确实就像要永别似的。
当你离开刚认识一年的朋友和熟人,三个月也许是一段漫长的时间。但大学第一年的时光却是无法替代的。
我给每一位读到这篇文章的新生的建议是:珍惜那段时光。随着你成长,也许将完全远离那些与你一起共同度过大学一年级生活的人,或者你也许能像我一样幸运,能在大学三年级有她们这些情同手足的朋友。
即使两年以后,你可能几乎完全忘却了大学一年级时候的室友,在体育馆门口碰到时也几乎认不出他们,但是大学第一年和这一年所带给你的全新感觉却是绝对无法替代的。
大学第一年过后,很多东西都会改变。遇到新朋友,尝试新事物。你会在成长过程中经历更多的事情。
大学四年级开始的时候,卡伦带着她家乡的男友凯文参观了我们的校园和城市。她指着我们在宾夕法尼亚州的头两年住过的阿瑟特顿大厦说:“这就是我们长大的地方。”
我们在课外学到的东西要比课内多。寝室是我们学习讨论大一和大二的功课的地方。我学到的最重要的东西就是真正的友谊是什么。我从未有过比艾莉莎、卡伦、加布里埃尔莉更好的良师益友。
那一课可以用艾莉莎和卡伦对我说过的一番话来做一个最好的总结。当时是最后一个学期期末,我很难过,需要靠在一个人肩上痛哭一场。艾莉莎和卡伦对我说:“不管以后我们相 距多远,或与谁交朋友了,只要我们想起大学生活,我们首先就会想起彼此。”
我完全赞同。
艾莉莎在阳台上讲的那个关于友情的故事还远远没有结束。有时候,我想故事的结局会不会是这样:
“…那四个小女孩长大了,实现了自己的梦想。她们现在天各一方,做自己想做的事情,从农村到城市,到郊区都能找到她们的身影,——一个是电脑技师,一个是医生,一个是律师,还有一个成了建筑师,有自己心爱的丈夫、孩子和宠物相伴。
偶尔,她们还会回到那个神秘的山谷,与老朋友见面,笑谈那些美好的时光。忘掉所有的 不快。
从此过着幸福的生活。”
超越生死的爱
她最喜欢红玫瑰,她的名字也叫“玫瑰”。每年, 她丈夫都会用漂亮的蝴蝶结扎上一束美丽的玫瑰送给她。丈夫去世的那一年,玫瑰依旧送到了她的门前。像以往的每年一样,玫瑰中的卡片上写着:“献给我心爱的人。”
每一年他给她送玫瑰,卡片上都会写着:“我爱你一年胜似一年”,或“我对你的爱将与日俱增”。丈夫去世的那年,她相信那将是最后一次在门前出现玫瑰。
她想丈夫一定是在这天以前提前预订了玫瑰花。她亲爱的丈夫并不知道自己会离她而去。他总习惯把事情提前办好,大大早于预定日期。这样一来,就算他很忙,一切仍然能有条不紊地进行。
她修剪了一下玫瑰的根茎,郑重地把它们插入一个很特别的花瓶里,然后坐在丈夫最喜爱的椅子上,茫然地凝视着他的照片,一坐就是几个小时,玫瑰就放在照片旁边。
一年过去了,没有丈夫陪伴的生活是如此的难熬。孤独、寂寞,她的生活仿佛一场悲剧。情人节那天,又是同样的时刻,门铃响了,一束红玫瑰放在她家门前。
她把玫瑰花拿进屋,望着这些玫瑰吃惊不已。随后,她给送花的花店老板打了电话。老板接的电话,她问他到底是谁要这样出人意料地对她做这种事,勾起她无限的忧伤。
“我知道您的丈夫一年多以前去世了,”花店老板说,“我也知道您会打电话过来问的,”他接着说,“您今天收到的玫瑰,是预先付过账的。您丈夫总是预先计划好一切,不会遗漏任何一件事情。”
“我这儿有一份长期订单,您丈夫早就把钱付了。所以,您以后仍将每年收到玫瑰花。另外,还有一件事情得跟您说,您丈夫几年前给您写了一张特别的小卡片。”
“如果哪一年他不在了,我就会在第二年把这张卡片交给您。”她跟老板道谢,然后挂了电话,眼泪潸然而下。犹疑踯躅中,她抽出了那张卡片,手指禁不住颤抖起来。
卡片里有她丈夫写的一封短信。她看着信,四周一片寂静。信是这样写的:
“亲爱的,离开你已经有一年了。对你的爱无法用言语表达。你是个完美的妻子,理想的伴侣。你是我的朋友,也是我的恋人。你让我无比满足。
当你收到这些玫瑰的时候,想想我们在一起的快乐时光吧,我们如此幸运,因为彼此拥有对方。你每年都将收到我的玫瑰,除非花店来送花的时候没有人应门。
一、理工科高校学生成才观现状一瞥
以笔者所在的理工科高等院校为例, 2013年普通高考招生计划中文科专业拟录取350人, 不到总招生人数3680人的十分之一。理工类学生学习总体特点为对专业学习十分重视, 欠缺人文思考与人文情怀, 尤其对于个人“成才观”的养成还处于原始的模糊感知阶段。我项目组成员设计了一组有关学生成才观的调查问卷。选取理工科专业两个班学生作为调查对象;发出问卷100份, 收回有效问卷98份。其中问卷第6题“你觉得目前你是哪一类学生?”的分析中, 有72人选择了B选项“知道未来形势严峻, 但现在很茫然, 不知道如何努力”。这充分表明, 有相当一部分学生对于自己的未来及个人价值, 没有真实的、可触的认识。对于理工科高校学生除了院系辅导员及相关负责老师在日常工作交流中的有益灌输和启发外, 学生很少能够有参与到关于“成才观”问题的思考中来。
二、大学英语教学在理工科高校学生成才观养成中的作用
问卷第5题“您认为自己价值观的确立, 受到什么影响最大?”的答案中, 有60人次选择了“家庭教育”, 29人次选择了“学校教育”, 这说明学生普遍认为, 家庭和学校是个人价值观形成的主要渠道。理工科高校学生如同其他大学生一样, 在进入大学学习后摆脱了高中时期家长的“时时看管”, 家庭因素对于学生人生观和价值观养成的影响力大大削弱。加之理工科院校学生接触人文思考, 尤其是对于“成才观”这个重要问题的思考机会是少之又少。而大学英语教学课堂其实是一个未被重视的成才观“培养皿”。高校新生入学两年内都会开设《大学英语》课程, 学期总学时最低也在48学时, 某些学周较长的学期可达90学时, 《大学英语》课程学时总数在理工科学生每学期的总学时数中绝对是“重头戏”。目前绝大多数大学英语教材均使用每单元选取一两篇课文的编辑形式, 课文内容一般会涉及政治、社会、文化和经济等各个方面。如果课文选得好, 内容贴切, 积极向上, 发人思考, 大学英语课堂就会变成大学生正确成才观有效的培养阵地。
三、《大学体验英语综合教程》中成才观相关课文的分析
《大学体验英语综合教程》由高等教育出版社出版, 是普通高等教育“十一五”国家级规划教材。该教材第三版共分四册, 每册8个单元, 每单元配有Passage A和Passage B共两篇课文。笔者对该套教材课文作了梳理, 其总数为64篇, 其中课文主题与大学生成才观直接相关的就有20篇, 占总四册教材总篇数的31.25%, 具体内容如下图所示。
这些课文材料的内容在课堂讲解过程中, 教师都会有意无意地促使学生思考课文内容, 总结作者观点, 内化蕴含的道理, 从而让学生潜移默化接收到其中“隐性”的大学生成才观教育, 进而引导当代大学生如何养成正确的个人成才观。
四、一些疑问
在讨论大学英语课堂教学在理工科高校学生成才观养成中的作用问题时, 很多人都会持怀疑态度, 在理论高度及具体操作层面都有很多值得探讨的地方, 主要集中在以下方面。
1. 大学英语不是主要教语言技巧吗?
怎么开始承载思想道德教育内容了?这正体现了很多人对英语教育的误读。不可否认, 英语教学是第二语言教学, 它主要包括语音、词汇、语法及篇章结构知识的讲授。但对于成功的语言教学来说, 最重要的是双语语言文化交际能力的培养。要达到这一目的, 就必须让学生对于课文内容, 思想观点有深刻认识。上述图表显示了课文与大学生成才观的有机契合。英语教师在分析篇章内容结构时, 通常会反复地操练学生的阅读、总结等技巧, 当学生完全掌握课文内容时, 就会做到一种无意识的成才观培养。
2. 一线英语教师们会有这样的学生成才观培养意识吗?
目前教学一线的英语教师确实在有意识地培养学生正确的成才观方面欠缺自发性和主动性, 这与社会对大学任课教师的工作职责定性不无关系。随着高等教育及管理的发展, 高校各部门职责愈发精细化。公众对于任课教师的工作, 一般定义在“传道、授业、解惑”, 而“育人”这个职能则似乎责无旁贷地被仅限于高校辅导员老师的本职工作中。其实, 在当今中国高校教育发展的潮流中, 老师应该是“学生的学习引路人”, 是“生活的指导者”, 甚至“人生的方向标”。特别是理工科高校大学英语教师在课堂教学中可以结合实际教学内容, 利用理工科学生较为新奇的人文气息, 引导学生发现自我社会价值, 逐步形成正确的成才观。
3. 理工科院校大学英语课堂教学对学生成才观的养成能有多大影响?
这个领域前人鲜有思考。究竟理工科高校大学英语教学中有意识地引导对学生成才观有多大的影响, 我们确实难以界定。大学英语课堂教学固然不能替代原有的高校学生思想教育体系, 但其在理工科高校学生成长观养成这一问题上的作用可以用之前的“锦上添花”来形容。大学生的成才观养成主要来源于学校的德育工作、学生个人家庭教育以及学生交际圈的影响。大学英语教学, 尤其对于理工科高校学生而言, 是他们能够接触到个人成才观思考领域的一个重要辅助途径, 是高校学生成才观教育的有益补充。
五、对理工科高校英语课堂的展望
理工科高校学生由于自身专业课程特点, 在四年的大学课堂学习中很少接触人文类课程, 鲜有机会在课堂中探讨类成才观话题, 其本身对于个人成才缺乏系统的认识和有效的引导。而大学英语课堂教学中不乏与大学生成才观养成相关的文章。这为理工科高校深入开展学生成才教育, 提供了有效的实践阵地。如果一线大学英语教师能够在课下留意积累关于大学生成才观的理论知识, 并在自己的课堂实践教学中结合实际教学内容有意“安插”相关的思考与讨论, 势必可以将我们大学英语教育又赋予更深层次的教育意义, 也会为理工科高校学生的未来成才观养成开辟一条新途径。

永不放弃 英国的伟大首相温斯顿丘吉尔爵士,小时候在哈罗公学上学。当时 他可不是个好学生,要不是出身名门,他可能早就因为违反纪律被开除了。谢天谢地,他总算从哈罗毕业了,在那里犯下的错误并没有影响到他上大学。后来,他凭着军旅生涯中的杰出变现当选为英国首相。他的才思、智慧、公民责任感以及在二战痛苦而黑暗的时期拒绝投降的无畏勇气,为他赢得了美名。他非凡的决心,不仅激励了整个民族,还鼓舞了全世界。
2在他首相任期即将结束时,他应邀前往母校哈罗公学,为满怀报国之志的同学们做演讲。校长说;校长说:“年轻的先生们,当代最伟大的演说家过几天就会你们演讲,他提出的任何中肯的建议,你们都要听从。”那个激动人心的日子终于到了。温斯顿伯爵站了起来——他只有5英尺5英寸高,体重却有107公斤。他做了言简意赅的讲话,永不放弃,永不,永不,永不,永不!“ 个人经历、教育机会、个人困境,这些都不能阻挡一个全力以赴追求成功的、有着坚强意志的人。任务再苦,准备再长,难度再大,都不能让他放弃自己的追求。就以本时代最有学问的两位科学家——阿尔伯特·爱因斯坦和托马斯·.爱迪生为例,他们都曾面临巨大的障碍和极端的批评,都曾被说成 “不开窍”,被老师当成笨蛋,而放弃。托马斯爱迪生还曾逃学,老师因为嫌他问的问题太多而经常鞭打他。爱因斯坦一直到将近9岁才能流利的说话,学习成绩太差,有些人认为他都已经学不好了。然而,这两个男孩的父母都相信他们,他们坚持不懈的每天和儿子一起努力,孩子们也了解到,要想成功就绝不要怕付出长期而艰辛的努力。最终,爱因斯坦和爱迪生都摆脱了童年的困扰,进而做出了造福当今全世界的伟大发现。4 再如亚伯拉罕·林肯这个英雄的典范,他一生面临了无数艰辛,失败和接二连三的不幸。他的出身和经历真是一点也算不上光鲜,他在一个非常贫困的家庭长大,只受过一年正规教育,轻伤两度失败初恋爱人的突然离世也使他精神崩溃,还在八次政治选举中落马。此后他的4个孩子有3个不幸去世,令他悲痛欲绝。然而坚强的意志鞭策着他推动他前进,使他二更加乐观,投入,坚毅,这让他得以全力以赴,一次次战胜生命中的巨大困难和挫折,一百年以后世界各地的人们都赞颂亚伯拉罕·林肯,认为他是有史以来最伟大的美国总统。5 与丘吉尔和林肯一样,只有那些“执著的追求成功的人,那些保持始终如一的精神意志的人,才会通过自身的努力获得成功。许多艺术家、政治家、作家和发明家都有同样的经历。他们之所以能取得这样的成功,是因为他们拥有强烈的意愿,不懈的准备,并保持对成功的激情。他们取得了成功并不是因为成功很容易,而是因为他们拥有克服重重障碍的意志,为了追求目标而勤奋努力。桑德拉·戴·奥康纳,成长于既没自来水也没电的养牛场,他努力学习也是自己接受到最好的教育,她的学习成绩在班上始终名列前茅,一路奋斗终于进入了斯坦福大学法学院,并以优异的成绩从法学院毕业,尽管奥康纳勤奋刻苦,但在20世纪50年代她仍然受到女人身份的制约。历史不叹服大学的学位有良好的声誉,她仍被整个法律界拒之门外,因为事务所名苑聘请才干稍逊的男性,也不愿冒险破例雇佣一位女律师。然而,桑德拉·戴·奥康纳并未放弃梦想,她执著的坚持下去,终于得到提名并任命为美国第一位女性最高法院大法官。她任职期间,对很多问题,例如堕胎的妇女权利都起到了极为关键的作用。很多人只是嘴上说他们想要什么东西,但并不真正地付出大量努力去实现。很多人因为害怕失败而不敢全军心尝试。而成功的秘诀在于内心燃烧的欲望——一种坚定不移的意志和专注力,从而激发行动的决心,即使疲惫,即使失败,也会继续准备继续前进。正如一句箴言所说:“你摔倒了多少次并要紧;你能多少次重新站起来对成功才至关重要!” 专注于汲取更多的知识,争取持之以恒的渐进,保持永不言退的坚强意志,即使在你疲惫想要松懈的时候或者困难重重之时。“执著地追求成功,!”“有志者事竟成!”,只要刻苦努力,意志坚决,坚决专心投入,准备充分,你就能跨越一切障碍完成所有壮举取得成功!
第二单元 游越恐惧 当时我和朋友正在法国旅行,我们把汽车停在海滩,眼前就是地中海。巨浪翻滚击打着构筑起防波堤的偌大岩石。人们说这里的海滩以其可怕的裂流而著称。恐俱让我不寒而栗。没有什么比水让我更害怕了。2只是看到了海就已经让我觉得反胃。
3我曾经一直都是喜欢水的,并且直到去年夏天我都还是一名游泳好手。那时,我决定爬上游泳池边上最高的跳板来跳水。我从那么高的地方跳下,重重地撞击到水面上。我肺里的空气一下子全被挤出去了不省人事。醒来时发现哥哥正把我虚弱的身体从游泳池里拖出来。从那时起,我对水的恐惧就没有消退过,我怕极了水。4 “贾森,你要过来吗?”我的朋友马特朝我喊道。我说:“好,就是欣赏一下景色”,又在心里默默加了一句,——在岸上欣赏。担心如果他们知道我害怕水而可怜我。突然我听到有人用法语喊叫。接着看见一群人没脱衣服,就冲到海里。我心想,这真是太奇怪了。我瞥见防波堤尽头的海浪中有个东西在上下浮动,我惊恐地意识到大事不妙倒,吸了一口凉气,那居然是个小男孩!前去救落水男童的人们搏击着海浪,但情况却不乐观由于水的拉拽他们根本不可能及时游到小男孩身边。我扭头看看那小男孩,他的头刚露出水面,然后一个浪头打过来,好一阵不见踪影,我不得不做点什么了。我估计了当下的情形后,注意到了对,那黄渤滴,小男孩靠近那个地方,也许我可以从那儿帮忙,我冲下海滩好像防波堤,但突然我想起了什么——水!顿时有了恐惧的症状,我手心冒汗,胃里感觉不适,我一下子停下来。水里的那些人低估了海浪的威力,工作没有任何进展只有我注意到了跑到防波堤上是到达溺水男童的最快的路径。然而在此生命攸关之际,极度恐慌我努力回想十几岁时接受的救生员训练。我应恐惧而全身瘫软,但我强迫自己向前移动,展开这场突发的救援行动。我不想做这些,在我施救之前肯定会有别人救他吧。迅速转过身来,深信某个游泳健将正向着小男孩劈波斩浪。,但是,让我沮丧的是一个人也没有,我回身面向大海,看见25码开外,恶浪击打着小男孩,我深吸一口气,终身跃入水中,一跳进水里,我感觉仿佛又回到了当年的那个游泳池,我喘不过气,拼命挣扎,惊恐万分,咸水触痛了我的双眼,“集中注意力,”我在心里喊道。“他在哪里?”
